SHEFFIELD.
A public meeting was held in the Road Board Office on Monday last, to appoint a deputation to wait upon the Commissioners of Railways, re route for Oxford and Temuka railway. Mr Bosaiter was elected chairman of the meeting, and the following resolutions were submitted to the meeting. Dr Meadows proposed and Mr Heighway seconded—“ That the member of the Selwyn County Council for this district be requested to head a deputation to-morrow to wait upon the Crown Commissioners of Railways whilst on their visit through Sheffield in reference to the route of the interior main Canterbury line of railway being made through the Malvern Hills.” Carried. Mr Heighway proposed,|and Mr Lilly seconded—- “ That in the absence of general information as to where the Oxford line of railway is coming, this meeting proposes that its route be on reserve No. 413, running into Sheffield, making Sheffield its junction.” Carried. Mr Lilly proposed, and Mr Rayner seconded ,—“ That the names of Dr. Meadows, Messrs J. Jebson, W. T. Popple, J. Heighway, D. Jebson, and G. B. Willis, junr., be added to the members of the Road Board in forming the deputation.” Dr. Meadows proposed, and Mr Brown seconded as an amendment—- “ That the present members of the Road Board be requested to add to their number as a deputation to meet the Crown Oommis. sioners of Railways the names of any gentlemen they may consider necessary in promoting the objects embraced in the first motion.” After a long discussion a show of hands was called for, which, resulted in an equal number for the amendment and proposition, and the casting vote of the chairman was given in favour of the amendment. Mr Barr proposed, and Mr Flanagan seconded—- “ That the deputation be requested to represent to the Crown Commissioners the desirability of carrying the railway through Russell’s Flat by Pig Saddle, South Malvern and Wairiri Valley, as agreed to at a former public meeting of the ratepayers.” Carried. Some conversation then ensued as to the necessity of making a railway crossing in the township, and also [as to the recent removal of the telegraph service, which, it was stated, had caused general dissatisfaction. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
