FIRE AT SHEFFIELD.
A mysterious fire occurred at Sheffield at 2 a.m. on Monday morning, March 22nd, the Xocsde being a house known as Wilson’s store, opposite to the Sheffield railway station. The house has been used during the past three or four months as an office for the Selwyn County Council’s engineer, Mr G. F. Ritso. Mr Ritso and his man went into the house at 5 pm. |on Sunday to get some ■chaff (which was stored upstairs) to feed his horse, and left the place safely locked up._ A person passing at midnight on Sunday noticed nothing wrong, but a little before two o’clock Mr Brown, carpenter, who lives opposite, noticed flames issuing from the window, and immediately sent his son with an axe to get into the house, and save what papers he could ; but before he reached the place the 'Fames were extending some feet beyond the building, and it was unapproachable on all sides. £lO will cover the loss of the County Council’s property, but Mr Ritso will a heavy loser, as, exclusive of his surveying instruments, theodolite, level, &0., about £SO •worth of books and £4O worth of furniture, harness, &0., were destroyed. The building is believed to be insured in the Colonial Office, but for what amount has not been ascertained.
