BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board of Education for North Canterbury was held yesterday at 3 p.m. Present —Messrs John Inglis (chairman), W. Montgomery, A. Duncan, Rev. C. Fraser, O. C. Bowen, and H. J. Tanored.

The Chairman reported the appointments which had boen made and the business done by the chairman since the last meeting, which was approved. The seal of the Board . was affixed to a contract for fencing at the side school at Heathcote, and likewise to several pupil teachers' agreements. Leave of absence was granted to Mrs Paterson. The Drill Instructor's and Provincial Auditor's reports were laid on the table. The Chairman of the school oommittee at Prebbleton wrote, asking for a return of the number of votes recorded for Mr Peryman at the late election of members for the Board, so as to ascertain his chances on a future

occasion. The Board decided to publish the result of the voting generally, as follows :—H. J. Tancred, 69 ; H. R. Webb, 39 ; A. H. Cunningham, 33; A. Saunders, 29; G. Booth, 19 ; E. J. Lse, 17; H. W. Peryman, 17 ; R. L. Higgins, 16 ; Rev. H. O. M. Watson, 9 ; H. B. Cocks, 3. A letter was read from the prinoipal of the Normal School, calling attention to the unsuitability of the period for the examination for certificates, in so far as encouraging students to avail themselves of the College classes. The letter was referred to the Normal School committee.

Correspondence was read from the South Rakaia sohool committee relative to a liability incurred by a former committee for timber. It was resolved that the Board pay the school committee the balance of the amount due for the current quarter in advanoe, out of which the account in question might be paid. The rest of the business was transacted in committee, and the Board adjourned.
