Mr Ehrenfried, Mayor at the Thames, and Mr Sheehan, the member, waited on Messrs Hall and Rolleston, and requested a reimbursement of the two thousand three hundred pounds alleged to have been wrongfully deducted from the sum supplied to the borough for the last three years for charitable purposes. A Curious CaseThe case of larceny of eight hundred sheep against George Orr, representing the firm of Messrs Meek and Miller, Oamaru, was dismissed, after occupying the bench two days. The sheep had been sold by Mr Scott, formerly partner with Mr Meek, and the latter, believing the sale to be fraudulent, instructed Orr to seize them, pending the appointment by the Supreme Court of a person to receive the disputed partnership property. AUCKLAND, March 15. A Stormy Passage. H.M.S. Cormorant had a tempestuous passage. When the vessel was thirty miles off the East Caps the wind began to coma down strongly from the North Bast, and: the vessel was compelled to stand off the land. The galo increased in force, and blew very strongly until two o'clock the following afternoon. In the meantime, the ship, which. was lying under easy steam and storm sails, drifted seventy-four miles to the Southward. A calm, which lasted three hours, was subsequently experienced, and she then encounterc 1 hea'vy S.W. squalls, during which one boat was carried away and two others stove in. The vessel had to run before the squalls under bare poles, not a stitch being set. The wind came round to westward and gradually decreased in force until eight o'clock next morning, when the vessel had run out of the storm. Police Items. A case of assault, the outcome of a meeting for the election of a school committee, was tried to-day. There was an absence of harmony at the meeting, and the proceedings eventually culminated in a fight. DUNEDIN, March 15. The Unemployed. The memorial from the unemployed has already received about 500 signatures. The men contend that the payment offered by the Government is too low, and a«k the Government to provide work immediately for those who like to accept 7s per day. They also ask that small sections should be let by tender at fixed amounts. The Walmate Bush Fire CasesThe case, Theobald v Studholme, an action to recever £IOOO damages for losses sustained by the plaintiff through the destruction of his property by the large fire at Waimate on November 15th, 1878, which fire, it is alleged, was caused by the negligence of the defendant's servants, oommenced in the Supreme Court to-day. The defendant pleads that the plaintiff u not possessed of the land in respect to which he claims, and further that he is not guilty of the grievances complained against. The case is likely to last the whole week.
