MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, Mabch 9. [Before J. E. Parker, Esq., and J. P. Jameson, Esq., J.P.’s.] Detox: and Disobdeblt. —Two men were fined 5s and 10s respectively, and one woman, just out of gaol, was relegated there for three months’ with hard labor. Indecent Assault. —Patrick Martin was charged with indecently assaulting an infant of tender age. Sergeant Morice applied for a, remand to get up the necessary evidence, which was granted until the next morning. Laeokny. John Henry Campbell was charged with stealing a pair of trousers, value 13s, the property of Robert Black The accused pleaded guilty, and threw himself on the mercy of the Court. He said that, unaccustomed to drinking, he had taken too much the day before, and while under the influence of liquor must have taken the trousers. He had no recollection of the circumstance until he found himself in the custody of the police, and the trousers in his possession. He hod never been in a Court before upon any charge, much less upon one of dishonesty. Mr Black’s shopman stated that the trousers had been hung outside the shop, and the accused, who seemed as if he had a glass or two of liquor, took them down and was walking away with them, when, on the information of a bystander, witness gave him into custody. The Bench took occasion to censure the practice of shopkeepers tempting dishonest persons, and therefore took a lenient view of the case, and sentenced the accused to seven days’ imprisonment with hard labor.
