WAIAU PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
On the evening of Tuesday, March 2nd, the annual soiree was held at the church, Waiau. The tables were spread under an awning beside the church, and loaded with confectionery, provided by Mrs Rutherford, of Leslie Hills, and Mrs W. O. Rutherford, of Montrose, and with fruit from Leslie Hills, Culverden, and Balmoral. After tea the company met in the church, the Rev. W. R. Campbell in the chair. On the motion of Mr Thomas Fraser, it was agreed that a vote of thanks should be given to the members of committee for the past year, and especially to Mr W. O. Rutherford, the treasurer. On the motion of Mr Duncan Rutherford, the following gentlemen were appointed members of committee for the ensuing year: —Messrs W. Rutherford (treasurer), George Mcßae, John D. Macfarlane, Robert Tinline, John Macarthur, A. M. Clarke, and Mr Thomas Fraser (secretary). Mr E. 0. Pasley moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Thomas Fraser for hia performance of the duties of secretary, and his attention to the opening and lighting of the church. Instrumental solos were played by Mrs Mcßae, Mrs Olivier, Miss Harding, and Mr Tinline, and duets by Mrs Thomson and Mrs Olivier, and by Miss Harding and Miss "Pinching. Miss Kont sang “ The lover and the bird”; Mrs OlNier “Happy hearts,” “Katty dear,” and “ Jetaie’s dream”; Mrs Wardale tho “ Mill wheel ” -, Mr Pasley “ Far away.” Mrs William Rutherford, in response to repeated calls, gave a song and took part in a duet with Mr Foster Mr Fester sang “ Tho wreck of the Hesperus,” “ The village blacksmith,” “The brid/e” “Nancy Lee,” and another song, receiving hearty encores. Mr Absolum rendered “The bashful man,” Miss Pinching playing the accompaniment, and in reply to an encore, gave the Laird o’ Oockpen ” Tke following votes of thanks vere then given To the ladies who provided the tea, on tie motion of Mr Corbett; to the ladies and gentlemen who contributed to tho musical entertainment, on the motion of Mr Edmund Rutherford ; to Mr James Anderson and Mr W. Creed, who erected tho awning and praiyired the tables, on the motion of MrDum'an Rutherford. A pleasant meeting was then closed by singing Bishop Ken’s Evening Hymn.
