HEATHCOTE REGATTA.

A meeting of gentlemen interested the Heathcote Regatta was held last night at the Commercial Hotel. Mr H. Thomson occupied the chair, and there was a very good attendance.

The Chairman said that the result of the canvass for subscriptions was that they might count on about £B9 to date collected and promised, and the small balance in the Bank. He thought the result of this canvass was such as would justify them in going on with the regatta. A letter was read from Mr J. T. Fisher, who had been elected as patron, accepting the oflice and stating that he would render every assistance to make the regatta a success. Mr J, O. Jones moved —“ That the Heathcote regatta bo held on Wednesday, the 24th instant.” The tide would serve on that day well, and it would not clash with the Easter holidays. Mr Walters seconded the motion. Some gentlemen present were of opinion that Tuesday, the 23rd, would be a better day. The Chairman said he thought that Wednesday was the best day for the regatta, as he had every hope of getting a half holiday on that day. On a show of hands being taken, the chairman declared the motion carried. The Chairman said that he was somewhat disappointed at the attendance that evening. The meeting was composed almost exclusively of rowing men. Time was when the meeting was attended by their public men, who helped them to get up the regatta. There was positively not a member of Parliament present, which was a sure sign that no elections were about or else they would see several members of Parliament hovering about. He hoped that the collectors would not forget to remind these gentlemen that they had public duties to perform in connection with regattas as well as other subjects. Ho must say that he should have liked to have seen some of those gentlemen present who it was well known took an interest in anything which developed the skill and muscle of the rising generation, and at the same time afforded amusement.

The meeting then adjourned. The committee afterwards met to arrange ;he programme.
