QUARTERLY LICENSING COURT.

The usual quarterly meeting of the Licensing Bench was held this morning at noon. The Commissioners present were, G. L. Mellish, Esq. (chairman), K. J. 8. Harman, Esq., and G. Leslie Lee, Esq., J.P.’s. HBW APPLICATIONS. O. B. Bennett applied for a license for an hotel situated at the corner of Colombo road north. Mr Stringer appeared for the applicant. As on former occasions, the application was opposed by the Temperance Party, represented by the Eevs. J. 8. Smalley, Cocks, and Mr W. H. Parker. The Chairman said the application for a license had been refused time after time, and the circumstance remained precisely the same now as then. Application refused.

Daniel Bryant, licensee of the Garrick Hotel, applied for a license for an hotel situated at the corner of the Lincoln road and the South town belt. Mr B. D. Thomas supported the application, and presented a memorial, influentially signed, alleging the necessity of a well, conducted hotel in the neighbourhood of the Cattle Yards. The Rev. H. V. Cocks asked for permission to make a few observations. Mr Thomas said there was no opposition, and no notice had been given of the intention to oppose the license. The Bench could not accede to the request of Mr Cocks. The Bench considered the Feathers’ Hotel and the Riccarton Hotel, and Addington Yards license fulfilled the requirements of the neighbourhood. Application refused. COHPIEMATION OP TEMPOEAEY TEANSPBBS. The following transfers were confirmed— Ackerman to Bowler, Waltham Arms, Waltham ; Carl to Richardson, Empire Hotel, Christchurch; Dunford to Baylee, Royal Hotel, Oxford terrace ; Morton to Patterson, Marine Hotel, Sumner; Black to Skinner, Cafe Restaurant, 'Christchurch. EOBOtGH HOTEL. Mr Joynt, on behalf of Mr Barrett, the licensee of the Borough Hotel, stated to the Bench that Mr Barrett had received a notice from the clerk to the Licensing Bench to the effect that a petition would be presented, praying for the cancellation of his license. He would like to be informed what action the Bench intended to take in the matter. The chairman said, that at present there was nothing before the Court, but the matter would be considered at the annual licensing meeting in June.
