NEWS OF THE DAY.

Important Decision. —In the cases of two alleged breaches of the Stamp Act against Joseph Farrow, heard to-day, Mr Salter appeared for defendant, and contended that, under section 11 of the Stamp Act Amendment Act, 1876, receipts for wages were exempt from stamp duty. The Bench, after consideration, agreed with the view of the case taken by Mr Salter and dismissed the two informations. The informant was represented by Mr S. Packman. MAGISTRATE'S Court, Lyttelton. —This morning Alfred Yeadon, for being drunk and disorderly at the railway station, was fined 20a; William McKnight Dickey, newly arrived from home, was, on the testimony of Dr, Rouse, released from custody, having recovered from lunacy from drink; and George Ford, on remand for lunacy, was sent to Sunnyside, on the medical testimony of Drs. Rouse and Macdonald.

Hospital Dispenses. —At a special meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held on Saturday afternoon, Mr Hawkes, who has for some time past held the office of assistant dispenser, was appointed as dispenser in the room of Mr Piidgeon, resigned.

Horticultural Show. —The autumn show of the Horticultural Society takes place on Tuesday in the Oddfellows’ Hall, and judging from the success attendant upon the efforts of the committee with regard to the art union, promises to turn out well. A large number of plants, &e., have been presented for the art union, the tickets in which are being rapidly taken up. Sporting. —Owners are reminded that nominations for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, 1881, are due with Mr Sydney James, secretary Dunedin Jockey Club, before 8 p.m. tomorrow evening (Tuesday). As the stake is a valuable one, the entry should be large. Owners are also reminded that nominations for the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, 1880, of 500 sovs., must be sent to the secretary before 9 p.m, this evening. The horse’s age at the time of entry must be given. The Quarantined Immigrants. The Health and Immigration Officers on Saturday visited the Quarantine Stations and the ships Westland and Waimate. No fresh oases of either measles or scarlatina have occurred, and the invalids are doing well. The single men on Quail Island will in all probability bo released to-day, and the Waimate and Westland be admitted to pratique. The passengers on board the Waimate will come in with the ship. Theatre Royal. —The comedy of “ Checkmate” and the burlesque of “ The Happy Land,” constituted the performance on Saturday night. The lower part of the house was well attended. This evening the burlesque will bo replaced by the romantic drama entitled “The Two Orphans,” in which Miss Florence Colville and Miss Lizzie Morgan will sustain the characters of the sisters Henriette and Louise, and Mr Hoskins that of Picard. It is a considerable time since the piece has been played in Christchurch, and it should prove attractive enough to run a few nights. Foul Drains in Lyttelton. —The foulness of the atmosphere arising from the sewers in Lyttelton was last Saturday unbearable. The weather was unusually hot, a circumstance which no doubt increased the offensiveness of the noxious exhalations from the drains, but in the absence of periodical and effectual flushing of the sewers it would certainly seem to be the duty of the local authorities to have stench traps put in wherever the sewer is open to the streets. The imperative necessity there exists for some action in this direction, was strongly apparent to every person who traversed the streets much on Saturday,

Thh Raphael Family. —This clever company appeared at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Saturday evening, when they went through a capital programme very satisfactorily. Entertainment at Pobt. —On Saturday night the Oddfellows’ Hall, Lyttelton, was crowded to excess with an appreciative audience to hear the “ Steel Lining Troupe,” of H.M.B. Cormorant, give their entertainment. Before the time of opening the building was filled to the doorj, and a good many were unable to gain admission. The programme consisted of—Part I, the “ Only original Christy Minstrels,” in full dress costume with the ebony finish, in which the tars brought down the house; a “ Stand easy ” interval of ten minutes ; and a burlesque of the “ Colleen Bawn.” The Mayor was present as patron, and the show was brought to a finish at the sensible hour of ten. Philosophical Institute. The first meeting of the session will be held on Thursday at 8 p m. City Council. —The ordinary weekly meeting of the City Council will bo held at seven o’clock this evening. Sydenham Borough Council. This Council will hold its usual mo = ting this evening. Gymnastics. —Mr James Q. Walker announces that the new term at the Normal School Gymnasium will commence on March 2nd. Canterbury College. —Professor Haslam will deliver an opening address on Monday next, at 7 p.m. in the English Literature Lecture Room.
