CRICKET.

PAST AND PRESENT CHRIST’S COLLEGE v. ASSOCIATION. This match was substituted by the committee in place of Bast v. West. The change has the merit of bringing forward a number of young players from one of our public schools, which is very advisable in the interests of the game. I* - might be made one of the regular contests of the season with advantage, as the cricket shown at the College is sure to improve as time goes on, and it is to be hoped that before a very distant date the School Eleven may prove strong enough to contest successfully a match with the association. Owing to the English mail closing on Saturday several of the Association were prevented from putting in a punctual appearance, but substitutes being provided for them in the field a commencement was made at about 230 p.m. by Ollivier and W. J. Ootterill, who faced the bowling of Turner and Longden. After the latter had bowled two overs he handed the ball to Puller, who, in his second over, secured Ootwicket, a good catch by Stevens at short leg being the immediate cause. One wicket for 26, a very good beginning ; but the continuation was not so happy. Ollivier was run out in the next over, and Reeves soon afterwards was well caught by Stevens. Rattray was next to leave, being bowled by Turner. The same bowler also sent E. J. Ootterill back, the score being at 52. The next over from Puller proved fatal to Sheath, who was bowled by a good breakback. Cay gill failed to increase the total, and after stealing a single Atack was numbered amongst the retired list. Grigg and Beswiok increased the score to 59, when the latter was bowled by Turner. Chapman had his career cut short by Stevens, who again distinguished himself by making a good catch, the innings then closed for 62, a small total, and much less than was expected. The bowling of Turner and Puller was, however, very good, and the wicket seemed to favor the bowlers. Very little delay occurred before the College entered the field, and few expected the success which they achieved. The first over proved disastrous to J. Powler, and Ashby, after making 5, was well caught by Chapman off his own bowling. Stevens also made 5, but was then caught by Oaygill at shortstop. Oorfe was bowled soon afterwards by Chapman, and Watson played a ball from Beswick on to his leg, from whence it found its way into his wicket. Pive wickets were now down for 28. Turner and Douglas, however, made a stand, and caused Atack to relieve Chapman. The second over of the change saw Douglas well caught by Reeves at mid-on. Milner was well caught by Grigg at long leg, where he had made 3, and Longden and Puller failed to score. Nine wickets were now down for 65, but Turner and Morice increased the total to 82 before the former was caught off a full pitch from Beswiok. Turner made 31 by some very fine hitting, which, contrary to his general practice, was nearly all on the off side. The fielding was good, not a catch being missed throughout the day. The bowling of Beswick was very successful, six wickets falling to him for 34 runs. The following is the score PAST AND PRESENT GOLLKGB. Ist Innings. W. J. Cotterill, c Stevens, b Fuller 10 A. M.
