DUNEDIN J. 0. RACES. [By Telegraph.! Third Day — Saturday, February 28. The annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club, which closed to-day, was very successful in every respect. There was a large attendance, good contests, and not the slightest hitch occurred during the meeting. The following are the events : Handicap Steeplechase of 80 sovs; three miles. Mr D. McMastera’ chg Scamp, aged, 9st 71bs (J. Allen) 1 Mr J. H. Lunn’s b g Robin Hood, aged, 9st 31bs, carried 141bs over (S. Osborne) 2 Mr J. W. Cotton’s b g Thilo, 6 yra (Owner) 3 Mr R. Ray’s gr gLone Hand, aged (McCoy) 0 Betting—3 to 2 against Lone Hand, 2to 1 Scamp, 3 to 1 the others. Scamp led over the first hurdle a length in front of Lone Hand, who was three lengths before Thilo, who nearly came to grief. R ibin Hood, who came last, refused at the third jump and fell, Osborne getting unseated, and losing a lot of time. At the back of the course Thilo fell on landing over a jump and dismounted Cotton, who was some time before he could catch his horse. The next catastrophe occurred at the gorse hedge, where Lone Hand refused repeatedly. In the meantime Scamp was sailing along ahead in beautiful style, clearing all obstacles like a bird, and led past the stand by a quarter of a mile. Robin Hood was by this time under weigh again, and remained that distance away, while Thilo was 200 yards behind, Lone Hand still refusing the hedge. From this point little requires to be said, Scamp having things all his own way, and winning by 200 yards, Robin Hood second, Thilo a bad third. Lone Hand walking in. The totalisator had £340, there were sixtythree investors on the winner. Lonehand was subsequently offered at auction by Mr Stephenson, and passed in at £l5O. Fobbdet Handicap, of 150 sovs. One and a half miles. Hon. W. Robinson’s br h Foul Play, by Traducer —Fancy, 5 yrs, Bst 111 b (Derritt) 1 Mr H. Goodman’s br h Chancellor, 5 yrs, 7st 51b (Rudings) 2 Mr W. Walters’ br c Libeller, 3 yrs, 6st 31b (Taylor) 3 Mr R. Bay’s Templeton, aged, 9st (Owner) 0 Mr J. Chaafe’s b h Atlantic, 4 yrs, sst 101 b (Thomson) 0 Betting—Even against Foul Play, 3 to 1 Chancellor and Templeton, 4 to 1 Libeller, 5 to 1 Atlantic. After one false start the lot were sent off on level terms, but Foul Play was immemediately taken to tho front, and led past the stand by a clear length. Next him came Chancellor, than Libeller and Atlantic abreast, with Templeton last. At three-quarters of a mile Libeller quitted Atlantic’s company, and after racing with Chancellor for a few hundred yards left him behind also, and got fairly up to Foul Play. Before entering the straight, however. Libeller was repassed by Chancellor, who chased the leader determinedly up the straight, but could not, however, get nearer than his quarters, for Foul Play came on full of running, and Derritt, sitting still on him, landed him a comfortable winner by a length. Libeller a good third, Atlantic fourth, Templeton last. Time—2min. 44jec.
Queen’s Plate of 80 sova, with sweepstake of 5 sovs each ; weight for age ; two miles and a distance. Mr E Cutts’ b g Mata, by Dead Shot— Eaupo, syrs, 9st lib ... (Matthews) f Messrs Mason and Yallanoe’s b c Volunteer, 3yrs, 7st 71b (Nolan) f Betting—loo to 1 on Mata.
This race, which threatened to be a walk-over for Mata, produced about the most sensational struggle ever seen on the Forbury course. The pace was very slow at first, Nolan keeping Volunteer half a dozen lengths behind Mata until 300 yards from home, when he called on the colt, and coming up hand over hand, caught Matthews napping, and fairly passed him when in the straight. The excitement as Volunteer was seen to be fully half a length in front, and apparently drawing away from the Cup winner, was intense; and Matthews soon had to ride Mata desperately. Very gradually the latter commenced to make up his lost ground, and two strides from home, Volunteer’s head was in front, but just on the post Matthews managed to force Mata just far enough to justify the judge in declaring it a dead heat. Time, 4min 53secs.
Nolan treated the spectators to a magnificent bit of riding, the set-to between the pair being very exciting. Mata afterwards had a walk over. Flting Handicap, of 80 sovs ; one mile and a distance ; winner of Forbury Handicap to carry 51b. extra. Hon. W. Robinson’s b h Foul Play, 5 yra., 9st 51b (including 51b penalty) ...(Derritt) 1 Messrs Mason and Vallanoe’s ch f Tera, 3

Betting—2 to 1 on Foul Play, 2 to 1 agst Chancellor, 4 to 1 agst Billingsgate, 6 to 1 agst the others. After three false starts a capital one was effected. Luna and Tera cut out the running and made the pace a cracker past the enclosure, followed by Foul Play and Chancellor together, Billingsgate and Templeton bringing up the rear. For the first half mile there were few changes, but then Billingsgate went up to Luna, and looked formidable, but he fell back rapidly, and Tera turned into the straight with a clear lead. Derrett now made his effort, and bringing Foul Play through his horses very quickly shot up to the front, and won hands down by half a length, Tera second, Luna third, Templeton fourth, Billingsgate and Chancellor last.
