THE AUCKLAND HARBOR.

The following remarks on the deterioration of the Auckland harbor are from the “New Zealand Herald” :—The Harbor Board is scarcely second to the most important of our local bodies; it is perhaps second to none, and it is therefore the more to be regretted that it does not stand higher in public esteem. There can be no doubt that there is a profound and general feeling of discontent with regard to it. It disposes of large funds, and it does not possess public confidence. The facts are indisputable that the harbor is fast silting up, that the Board is mainly responsible for it, and that it does nothing to provide a remedy. It is with a sense of danger that the mail steamer is now bsrthed at the Queen street jetty. The Scotchman has had to abandon her berth at the Railway Wharf, because of the diminished depth of water ; the City of Cork has a similar difficulty to contend with ; the Meg Merrilies, |on the occasion of her last arrival, lay over at slack tide at great peril to the vessel; and, notwithstanding all this, the Harbor Board meets, talks, and does nothing. Now it might almost be said that the interests of Auckland centre in its port, .and it cannot be tolerated that it should be allowed to go to the dogs because the Board is too apathetic or too indifferent to do its duty. It appears to be impervious to all remonstrance, and things are fast coming to the point that if it cannot he induced to do its duty the public must step in and bring to bear the potent force of its opinion.
