He fainted on being taken into the corridor of the Court. “ Twick’em! Twack’em!" Solomon said. Mr H. Binden, head master of Newton East School, was charged with assaulting Edward Golding, a pupil ten years of age, by flogging him for truancy. The case was dismissed, each party to pay their own costs. The boy had been flogged last quarter for the same offence. He was absent last quarter sixty-eight times out of a possible hundred and six, and this quarter seventeen times out of a possible thirty. The Communists in Auckland. Six French Communists have gone to Whangarei to seek work at the coal mines or gum fields, and the local police have been instructed not to interfere with them in any way that would prejudice their chances of employment. OHINEMUTU, February 24. A Delicate JusticeA violent ejection case from Ohinemntu Hotel came to-day before Messrs Brabant and Graham. Five Natives appeared upon the information of Inspector Emerson. Counsel objected to Mr Graham’s sitting on the Bench, as being implicated. Mr Graham declined to leave the Bench, and counsel ultimately said he saw no chance of the Natives getting justice, and would procure a parliamentary inquiry. Upon the application of the Natives the Magistrate adjourned the case to March sth, to Tauranga, adding that he did not think he could sit with Mr Graham, who might be implicated, but with impartial justices at Tauranga. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 24. Irish Relief FundNo. 4 Company Armed Constabulary, stationed at Okato, have subscribed £B4 17s towards the Irish Relief Fund. The amount is being forwarded by post far transmission home. One man subscribed £5. Nos. 1 and 2 Companies, stationed at Waihi, subscribed £45. GISBORNE, February 24. Fire in NelsonA fire broke out about noon in some rooms above a shop in Trafalgar street, occupied by Mr Crawford, musician. The fire brigade assembled and expeditiously extinguished the fire, which appeared serious, inasmuch as a valuable block, including Wymond’s 'corner, was in jeopardy. There was no insurance. The loss is very trifling. TIMARU, February 24. Tixnaru Harbour BoardMr Fulbert Archer was unanimously reelected chairman of the Timaru Harbor Board to-day. A very large number of applications have already been received from persons in all parts of the colony for the post of secretary to the Board. DUNEDIN, February 24. Late Fire on Shipboard. The fire which occurred last night on the Marlborough is attributed to carelessness in using lights in the hold. He is ComingW. H. The statement of the trustees of the Kaitangata fund shows that of the total amonnt of the fund, £15,315, the sum of £655 11s 2d is to credit on current account, and £14,000 is on deposit. £lO2 was received as interest on the deposit account, and £358 from sundry investments. £llOO was paid to the executive committee, and £14,200 remains to the credit of the fund. Tramway Extension. A meeting last night decided to take the p/reliminary steps to form a company to construct a tramway to Roalya, one of the hill suburbs. Unlocking Railway Cars. In reply to a deputation which waited on him this morning on several matters in connection with the port line, Mr Conyers expressed himself favorable to leaving the carriage doors unlocked, explaining that the danger to children had been the only cause for this not being done in the past. However, he believed a spring had been manufactured which would lessen the risk. On the Retrench TackAt the City Council to-day the letter from the Lord Mayor of London re Rowland Hill memorial was referred to the finance committee. By the adoption of the report of a special committee appointed to consider the question of retrenchment, the City Council have reduced the annual expenditure by two thousand pounds. San Francisco Mail BoatsWith the object of accelerating the San Francisco mail service, and providing for probable trade requirements, the Pacific Mail Company have applied for and obtained permission from the contracting Governments to send the City of Pekin, or City of Tokio, from San Francisco to the colonies for the purpose of being inspected and substituted, if necessary, as mail boats under the contract for either the City of New York or the City of Sydney. The vessels are the largest and most magnificent of the steamers of the Pacific Mail Company’s fleet. A Joint Protest-

The Government have received favorable replies from the Governments of the other Australian colonies regarding the proposed cooperation in a remonstrance to the French Government against the deportation of convicts from New Caledonia to Now Zealand. Sir J. Yogel will be communicated with on the subject.

IRISH FAMINE BELIEF FUND. A meeting of the committee of the abore was held yesterday at 4 p.m. Present—The Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Mitchell, Hebden, Perceval. Thompson, O. E. Briggs (hon. sec.), and Father Ginaty. The Mayor reported that since last meeting he had received the following amounts :—From Mr H. J. Lee, Southbridge, £l9 9s 6d ; H. W. Packer, £5; J. Palmer, £5; J. Hay, £4; A. W. Walker, £1; proceeds of Shadow Pantomine, £2l 18s, Mr Hebden gave a statement of the receipts and expenditure connected with the Shadow Pantomime. Votes of thanks were recorded to the following persons who had kindly rendered gratuitous services—viz., Miss Amy Johns, Mr Wilkinson Mr Hydes, Mr Hull, Mr Frank Hobbs, Mr B. J. Leahy, Mr Barker, Mr Petherick, and Mr Bose. It was resolved that a special vote of thanks be recorded to Professor Bickerton, Mr E. W. Seager, Mr Cherrill, and Mr J. M. Thompson, for their services in producing the Shadow Pantomime, It was resolved that Mr J. P. O’Callaghan be requested to state when he will be prepared to meet and report to the committee the result of his canvass on behalf of the fund in the up country districts, and that he be requested to incur no further expense. It was decided to close all lists on March 31st, and to advertise that all proceeds should be remitted to the Mayor of Christchurcn not later than that date. The meeting then adjourned. The next meeting will be called by advertisement from the Mayor.
