NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY SENATE.
The Senate resumed yesterday at three o’clock in the afternoon. Present' —The Chancellor, Hon. W. Gisborne, Professor Sale, Rev. Dr. Stuart, Professor von Haast, Revs. Charles Fraser, Bruce, Johnston, Habens, Patterson, Professor Brown. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Professor Brown moved—“ That a committee, consisting of the Chancellor, Professor Sale, Rev. 0. Fraser and the mover, be appointed to go over the reports of the examiners on the entrance examinations and junior scholarships, and to make up the results.” After some discussion, the resolution was carried. The annual report of the Chancellor was then considered, that being the next business on the order paper. It was resolved to go into committee to consider the report. On resuming— The Chancellor presented the ad interim report of the committee, which was considered clause by clause. The following resolutions were passed : 1. “That the election of the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor be taken into consideration on Monday next during the forenoon sitting.” 2. “That the question referred to in the fifth paragraph of the Chancellor’s report be referred to a select committee, consisting of the Chancellor, the Rev. Dr. Stewart, Rev. Mr Bruce, and Professor Brown.” 3. “ That the question of granting the ad eundum degree of D.C.L. be referred to a committee, consisting of the Chancellor, Dr. Stewart, Rev. Mr Bruce, Professors Brown and Sale.” 4. “ That a deputation be appointed to wait on the Minister of Education after his arrival in Christchurch on the subject of securing, by law, a proper connection between the University, Colleges, and public hospitals where classes are conducted in connection with the University ; the deputation to consist of the Chancellor, Rev. Dr. Stewart, Rev. Mr Fraser, Rev. Mr Habens, and the Hon. Mr Gisborne.” 5. “ That a committee be appointed to revise the Entrance Examination scheme, such committee to bo Professor Sale, the Rev. Mr Johnston, Rev. Mr Patterson, and Professor Brown.” 6. “ That the Senate express its satisfaction at learning that the Gilchrist trustees have agreed to transfer one of the Gilchrist scholarships of £ 100 per annum, tenable for three years, to New Zealand, and its hope that the scholarship may be made as soon as possible available for competitors in the colony. That copies of this resolution be sent to the Government for the AgentGeneral, and also be sent by the Chancellor to Mr Carleton, in England.” 7. “ That a deputation, consisting of the Chancellor, Rev. Dr. Stewart, Rev. C. Fraser, Rev. Mr Habens, and Hon. W. Gisborne, bring the subject of the reserves for higher education again under the notice of the Hon. the Minister of Education.” The Senate then adjourned till 10 o’clock next day, _
