BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Board of Education for North Canterbury held its usual fortnightly meeting yesterday at the usual hour. Present—Messrs J. Inglis (chairman), W. Montgomery, A. Duncan, H. R. Webb.
The Chairman apologised for the absence of Rev. 0. Fraser, who was engaged at the University Senate. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The Secretary read a list of interim appointments which had been made, and certain items of expenditure incurred, which the Board passed. The Chairman read the following circular received from the Education Board at Wellington : Education Department, Wellington, February 7th, 1880. The Secretary to the Education Board, Christchurch.
I have the honor, by direction of the Minister of Education, to state that the claims on the sum at the disposal of the Government for school buildings being very largely in excess of that sum, it is indispensable that Education Boards do not incur fresh liabilities on account of school buildings in excess of the amount of available balance in their hands, the balance (if any) of last building grant still to be received by them from the Government, and the moneys available out of their own ordinary Board fund, until the returns recently called for have been fully considered by the Government, and a decision has been arrived at. John Hislop. WEST CHBISTCHUBOH. _ The Board approved of the appointment of pupil teachers recommended by the committee, and the appointment of Miss Jack as assistant mistress. The appointment of a sewing mistress was postponed. LEAVE OP ABSENCE, Application was made for leave of absence to the end of the quarter, on account of illness, by Mr Bishop, master of the Lincoln school. The Board granted the leave of absence, and authorised the committee to procure temporary assistance. LOWEB HEATHCOTE. A number of tenders were read for fencing at the Lower Heathcote side school, and that of Mr Giles accepted. KAIEOTTBA. The Board consented to an application of the school committee at Kaikoura for an architect to be sent up to inspect the school buildings, with a view to additions. AMBBBLBV. The committee wrote, suggesting certain improvements to the school grounds. The Board approved of the removal of the fence and the closets, KOWAI PASS, The Board sanctioned the expenditure proposed by the school committee for improvements, the amount to be deducted from the building fund. The committee forwarded with the application, a vote of thanks to the Board for the substantial and commodious school they had caused to be erected. MANDEVILLB PLAINS. The Board approved of a site for a library recommended by the school committee. The remainder of the business was transacted in committee, after which the Board adjourned.
