THE REGISTRATION OF ELECTORS ACT.
[By Telegraph.]
WELLINGTON, February 18. The Government have just completed the arrangements necessary for bringing into practical operation the Begistration of Electors Act, passed last session, Under that Act new officers, called " Registrars," are required, who combine the functions of Registration and Revision Offioers, with various duties imposed under the reformed Bystem of franchise and registration. These enlarged duties could not well be fulfilled in many cases by Government officers, who hold the position of registration officers in addition to their principal appointments. On the other hand, the Government were desirous of avoiding as far as possible incurring any large increase of expenditure by creating new separate officers. It has been decided, therefore, to allot the appointments of registrars among existing Government officers of suitable position, clerks to the Bench whereever practicable, giving them small increases of salary as compensation for the additional duties they will be called on to undertake. The necessary proclamation, appointments, &c, will probably be gazetted in the course of this week.
