RETRENCHMENT.
[By Tblegbaph.']
WELLINGTON, February 18.
The Government are steadily maturing a scheme of careful retrenchment in various departments of the civil service, and it is expected that the estimates foir the coming financial year will show material reductions in several directions. This is necessarily a work of some time and much difficulty, but the Government are persistently working out the practical details of the economical measures contemplated. It is well known that large savings have been effected in the working of the railway*, and it is found practicable in many cases to curtail the present large expenditure in postal and telegraph offices in various outlying districts, which often have two complete separate establishments where one would amply suffice for all requirements. A commencement was made in the case of Hokitika, Westport, and Reefton, where, by combining the postal and telegraph offices under one head, a saving of fully a thousand a year is effected. Care will be taken that the retrenchment* fall with as little hardship as possible on the officers dispensed with, who will be transferred to other places or departments wherever practicable. Other economical plans are under the consideration of the Ministry.
