KAIKOURA SCHOOL.
The children of this school, to the number of 72, met on the evening of February 9th to receive prizes and give an entertainment of music and recitation, under the leadership of Mr and Mrs Savers, the latter presiding at the harmonium. The schoolroom was well filled with parents and others, and the chair was taken by Mr Paap, chairman of committee, who ably conducted the affairs of the evening. A very lengthy programme, consisting of about forty school songs and recitations, was gone through in a very creditable manner, and was highly appreciated by the audience, who were agreeably surprised with the way in which the children recited and. sang. In the distribution of prizes every child belonging to the school received a book. The special prizes were awarded as under : I. Mr William Smith's prizes of 10s 6d each, to the best boy and girl for general pood conduet—lst, Walter Chapman; 2nd, Christina. McDonald. 11. Eegular attendance—lst, Albert Howard ; 2nd, Mary Ann Smith. 111. Borne work—lst, John Jas. O'Donnell; 2nd, George Burrell. IV. Good manners —Ist, Harry Harris. V. For best recitation —Ist, John J. O'Donnell; 2nd, Mary Ann O'Donnell; 3rd, John O'Donnell. VI. Sewing prizes Standard iv. Georgina Paap ; 2nd, Elizabeth Poole. Standard iii.—lst, Mary Ann O'Donnell; 2nd. Mary Ann Smith. Standard ii.—lst, Mary Keenan; 2nd, Mary Workman, After the prizes were distributed the chairman gave a short address, congratulating the teachers and scholars on the success of the evening, and expressing a hope that the meeting would not be the last of that kind in Kowai. Votes of thanks were then accorded to all who had contributed towards the prizes and the amusement of the evening. The singing of the " National Anthem" brought a very pleasant evening to a close.
