HEATHCOTE REGATTA.
A public meeting was held at Cookson'e Commercial Hotel on Wednesday, with the object of taking into consideration the advisability of holding a regatta on the Estuary in March next. There was a good attendance of gentlemen interested in the movement. Mr H. Thomson occupying the chair. The Chairman stated the object of the meeting, and briefly reviewed the efforts made in the same direction previously, the last regatta on the Heathcote having been held in 1877. The question of funds, he pDinted out, was the most important question for consideration. In past years they .had always a nest-egg in the shape of a good bank balance ; this year, however, the sum to their credit was no more than £± 9s lOd. He left it now in the hands of the meeting to take the initiative.
Mr Clark moved, " That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that a regatta should be held on the Heathcote river thisy ear." Seconded by Mr A. Pavitt, and carried. The Hon. J. T. Fisher was appointed patron of the regatta ; and to the office of commodore, Mr J. L. Coster was elected.
The committee elected were —Messrs J. R. Evans, J. W. Davies, H. Thompson, A. R. and F. Pavitt, J. S. Monck, A. O. Watson, R. D. Petrie, Joseph Day, J. O. Jones, S. O. Kesteven, Thos. Taylor, B. J. Walters, L. Ollivier, H. Hobday, F. D. Kesteven, F. A. Button, and E. M. Bolton. Messrs S. C. Kesteven and J. O. Jones were elected secretary and treasurer respectively. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Packard, " That the committee be supplied with collecting books, and report to a meeting to be held a fortnight hence."
