The Govkbnoh. His Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson, Lady Robinson and suite arrived this morning in the steamer Hinemoa.

Cricket,—The following will represent the Royal Oak O.U. in their match with the Bingsland C.O. to be played in Hagley Park (near bathing place) on Saturday :—W. Gills, W. George, J. Comer, L. Comer, W. Mason, J. Garty, H. Forsyth, T. Casein, T. Wilson, J. Holloway, and W. Allardyce : emergencies, Mortlock and Lafferty : play to commence at 2 p.m. sharp.—A match was played between the Addington and Waltham Clubs, which resulted in a victory for Addington by two runs. For Waltham, Withers, Warman, and Dynes played well; while, for Addington, Curtain, Lyons, Beatty, and Harman distin* guished themselves in batting and bowling. Resident Magistrate’s Court.—At this Court to-day B. E. Dransfield, charged with obtaining goods and money by means of a valueless cheque for £6 16s 9d, was remanded to to-morrow. N. Columbus, charged with housebreaking, was remanded to Southbridge, where the warrant had been issued. In the ease of H. Marks, charged with exposing and aslling fruit upon the Lord’s Day, a number of knotty points were raised by Mr Stringer, and the case was adjourned by Mr Mellish for consideration. Tint Morality op Christchurch.—ln the R.M. Court this morning His Worship and Mr Stringer found themselves at variance on the above subject. The latter held that Christchurch was renowned far and near for its piety and morality ; indeed some people said its sanctimoniousness. Mr Mellish said he could not agree with Mr Stringer on this point. The Cash op Murphy.—This case was concluded yesterday after we went to press and resulted in Murphy being committed for trial. Bail was allowed, himself in £2OO and two sureties in £IOO each. T.O G.T.—Members of the order and the public generally are reminded that Mr J, W. Jago will deliver an address on temperance, in the Templar Hall, this evening. The public will bo admitted at a quarter past eight o’clock. The election of District Deputy for Christchurch, has resulted in the return of Mr O. M. Gray, by a large majority. City Gab Supply.—The manager of the Gas Company states that there is no longer any occasion for uneasiness as to the supply of gas, satisfactory arrangements having been made for its continuance.

H.M.S. Cormorant.—This man-of-war, which arrived yesterday at Lyttelton, will bo open to visitors to-day, from 1 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. The vessel will probably remain in harbor for three weeks.

Ms Ohiniquy at Lebbton. —On Tuesday evening the Rev. O. Ohiniquy delivered hie lecture on “Rome and Liberty,” in the Town Hall, Laeston, the hall being well filled. The Rev. J. W. Oree was called to the chair, and was accompanied on the platform by Rev. Mr Worker and Rev. A. Blake. The Rev. Mr Worker offered prayer. In introducing the lecturer the chairman referred to the work done by Mr Obiniquy in Montreal, and read from the records of the Pan-Presbyterian Council. For two hours and a half the interest of the audience was maintained by the lecturer. Anthems were sung at intervals with effect by the Presbyterian Church Choir. Public House License Transfer.— During the re-building of the Junction Hotel, at Rangiora, the Chairman of the Licensing Commissioners has granted permission to the licensee to use the building formerly used as Mr McKoown’s auction room as a bar, till the next quarterly meeting of the Commissioners.

New Zealand Rifle Association.— Those who intend taking part in the Second Prize Meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, at Nelson, on March Ist, are reminded that entries close with the secretary, at Wellington, on or before Saturday next. Entertainment at Ashbubion. —Mr and Mrs Florence, assisted by amateurs, gave an entertainment at the Ashburton Town Hall on Tuesday night. There was only a moderate attendance, but the performance of both Mr and Mrs Florence and the amateur assistants was excellent, and elicited the heartiest applause from those present. Papbb from Wood. —The manufacture of paper from wood is attracting considerable attention in some countries. In Norway, in connection with the timber trade, fully twenty mills are now engaged in making paper. This is an industry deserving some attention in this colony.

Irish Relief Fund. —The benefit to be given to-night at the Theatre Royal in aid of the fund now being raised for the relief of ihe distress in Ireland, promises to be a success. The programme comprises “ The Handsome Husband”—now pretty familiar to Christchurch playgoers—in which Miss Florence Colville, Mr Hoskins, and the members of the newly formed dramatic company, will appear ; a prologue written by Mr Ludford for the occasion, and the burlesque of “La Sonnambnla.”

The Railway Staff. —To-day Mr Conyers and those of the railway officials more intimately connected with the Commissioners’ Department proceed to Dunedin, where they will in future be stationed. Mr Conyers takes with him the respect and esteem, not only of those with whom his official duties have brought him into contact, but also of all the citizens of Christchurch, and the same may be said of the officers accompanying him. Mr F. Back will take charge of the Christchurch section.

The Wanderers’ Club.—A general meeting of the Wanderers’ Club will be held at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday nest at eight o’clock. Loan and Investment Association. — The annual general meeting of the shareholders of the Permanent Loan and Investment Association will take place this evening, in Mr Charles Clark’s auction rooms, Hereford street.

Mr Chinicjut Criticised. —Mr M. Mosley, considering that his letter re Irish distress was not answered by Mr Chiniquy last night, will criticise the statements made by way of answer. For this purpose Mr Mosley will deliver an address in the Oddfellows’ Hall, on Monday. Volunteer Parade.— The parade of the headquarters corps of volunteers, for inspection by the officer commanding the district, takes place this evening, at the drill shed.

Sunday School Union.— The thirteenth annual general meeting of the above takes place this evening in the Wesleyan schoolroom, Durham street. Addresses will be delivered by the Eeva. H. Williams and A. Reid, and Messrs Crabtree and Richards.

Cricket Fixtures.— The following members of the Christchurch Cricket Club will repre sent them in their matches with the Midland Club, on Saturday next and following one : First Eleven—Messrs Anson, Caygill, Turner, White, Fisher, Washer. Wheatley, Marshall, Mayne, D. Lusk, and G. Booth. This match will be played on the Association ground Second Eleven—Messrs Marshall, Johnson, Hooper, Ashby, Bengali, Niven, Taylor, Hepworth, J. Lusk, Caygill, and Cant. This match will bo played on the Christchurch Club’s ground. Both matches commencing at 2p m. Railway Band. —The following programme will be played by tho Railway Band in Cathedral square this evening: Quick March, “Melinda,” E. Marie: Fantasie Varie, “ Souvenir De Valence,” M. Bleger ; Grand March. “ The Royal Standard,” E. Marie : Valse, “ Kildare,” M. Seaman; Euphonium Solo, “ Village Blacksmith,” W. H.
