MURDER AND SUICIDE.

LATEST PARTICULARS. [By Tblbobaph.] DUNEDIN, February 8. The first accounts regarding the case of murder and suicide were exaggerated as regards the attempt of Hayes to murder his two children and lodger. He made no attempt except upon his wife and himself, in both of whioh he succeeded but too well. The facts are as follows :—The lodger, named Trenwick, waj awoke at 6 a.m. by Bcreams proceeding from the bedroom. He found Mrs Hayes still alive, but at the last gasp. She was sitting in the bed, her throat being terribly out. Hayes was in a chair in front of a looking glass drawing a razor across his own throat. Trenwick, with the assistance of the two children, got the razor from Hayes, and then he ran into the street to give the alarm. Gilks and a warder from the Hospital came, and all went back and met Hayes, who got exoited on .seeing the lodger, exclaiming he was the cause of all this. The lodger then went for a doctor, leaving Hayes in tho care of the warder, from whom he got loose and got the carving knife, and completely severed the windpipe, dying in a couple of minutes. Mrs Hayes was dead ere the doctor appeared on the scene. Trenwick and others say there was not the remotest cause for jealousy, as would appear to be the case by Hayes blaming Trenwick. It is presumed, therefore, that the act was in consequence of a sudden attack of insanity. Two sons have been confined in the Asylum on account of insanity. It is thought that this prayed on the mind of Hayes. An inquest will be held to-morrow.
