EDUCATION BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Education Board took place yesterday afternoon. Present —The chairman (Mr Inglis) and Messrs Montgomery, Duncan, Saunders, Tailored, Bowen and Webb. The minutes of the last meeting wore read and confirmed.

An apology was read from Mr Stevens, who was prevented from attending the meeting by an appointment elsewhere. The usual statement of appointments made and expenditure authorised during the fortnight was read and approved. Reports from the Inspector on various schools were laid upon the table ; also a report from the drill instructor. The following return of districts in which there was no election of school committees was laid on the table :—Ashburton Porks, Ashley Bank, Dunsandel, Gebbie’s Valley, Irwell, Kaiapoi Island, Kyle, Little Akaloa, Longbeach, Mount Somers, New Brighton, Port Levy, Little Rukaia, SeaSeld, Selwyn, Southbrook, Springston, Stoke, Tinwald, Waikuku, Weedon, West Melton. The Board appointed Monday, the 15th of March, for the election of committees in the above-named districts. A letter was received from the Local Board of Health, recommending the adoption of precautionary measures to preserve health in the schools, as suggested in the report of the health officer at the last meeting of the Board of Health. The letter elicited a conversational discussion, in which the matter was considered from different points of view. Ultimately the Board resolved to distribute circulars among the schools, in accordance with the recommendation of the Board of Health.

An application was considered from the school committee of St Albans to the effect that the name Merivale should be added to the title of the district.

The Board did not see any reason for an alteration at present. General reports from schools were considered as to their sanitary condition, want of increased accommodation, &c. The Board then wont into committee, and, on resuming, adjourned.
