ACCIDENTS AT RIFLE RANGES.
The “ New Zealand Herald ” writes :—The recent lamer table accident at the Kaiwarariflo range, Wellington, by which a marker was shot dead by a Volunteer firing at the range has drawn afresh public attention to the unsatisfactory arrangements made at the different rifle ranges in the colony for the safety of the markers. The “New Zealander” suggests that the Minister of Defence should searchingly investigate the above case, and devise a befitting safeguard for the men whose lives are thus imperilled. Amongst other proposals it mentions the establishment of electrical or telephonic communication between the marker and firing party. _ The record of accidents is sufficiently extensive to justify the expense. One Volunteer at the Thames had his life shartened by wounds received at the Thames butts recently; another was desperately wounded at Nelson : and now comes the moat sorrowful tragedy of all at Kaiwarra. Anyone witnessing rifle practice at the Mount Eden range must come to the conclusion that, if no casualty has yet occurred, it has been more by good luck than any effective protection afforded to the markers, who have more than once had narrow escapes.
