MECHANICAL AND MINING ENGINEERING.
A publio meeting was held yesterday in Mr Cassidy's Hotel, by a number of gentlemen interested in the forming of an Institute of Mechanical and Mining Engineers. Mr Hamilton was called to the chair, and spoke at some length of the good results that were likely to be derived from an institute. He contended that the bringing together of the members of the professions was the best means of advancing and promoting thtir interests and knowledge. All before him knew of the amount of good useful work done by such institutes in England, America, and throughout the Continent, and he only called their attention to the fact to show that what had brought good to all countries, would hardly bring anything but good to this. He was sorry to see so few present who were interested in engineering, but it was easy to account for that, as Springfield was an out-of-the-way place for most of them. But he was sanguine as to the success that would attend the forming of the institute. It was resolved that Mr T. D. Wilkin be secretary pre tem. Mr Bridgett moved, and Mr R. Douglas seconded, "That the seoretary be instructed to write to Dr. Hector, asking him to become president if a sufficient number could be enrolled to form an institute." Mr Bridgett thought that several others whose names he mentioned should be written to, and the secretary was instructed to write to them and ascertain their opinions in the matter. Mr Bridgett then moved, and Mr Douglaß seoonded, " That this meeting be adjourned to Coker's Hotel, Christchurch, on March 3rd, at 12 noon." A vote of thanks to the chairman brought the proceedings ta a close.
