The Waimate PlainsThe Native Minister nni party arrived at Waihi from Opunake soon after eleven o’clock yesterday, and, after staying at the station, prococeded to Hawera via Normanby. Preparations are being made at Waihi station for a movement to Waimate Plains to-day. A site hag been chosen for a redoubt to be immediately erected on the Plains—on the Kaipuna stream it is thought. WANGANUI, January 26. Suspected SuicideA man named Thos. Trice has disappeared. His clothes were found near Virginia Lake, and it is feared that he has committed suicide . The lake has been dragged, but owing to its I depth and the inequalities of its bottom, without success so far. Trice was formerly landlord of the White Hart Hotel, Marton, but having failed has been depressed in spirits lately. Remarkable Discovery. A remarkable discovery has been made near Wanganui. Near Cape Karakara some of the sand hills was blown away by the recent gales, and a great heap of bones and remains of a house were uncovered. The Natives know nothing of it, and have no traditions of a settlement er of a burial place there. It is believed that further examination will show that they are remains of a race of inhabitants of New Zealand prior to the arrival of the Maoris. Selling Adulterated Milk. DUNEDIN, January 26. At the City Court three milkmen were each fined 10s and costs for selling adulterated milk. Twelve samples were taken, but the analyst only reported against these three. AUCKLAND, January 26. Wreck of the MinniehahaThe schooner Minnehaha, owned by Messrs McKenzie and Baglow, has been wrecked in Harvey’s group, South Sea Islands. The valuable cargo was lost, but the captain and crew were saved. She was insured for £3OOO in a floating policy on the cargo and vessel. AUCKLAND, January 24. The Brigantine Progress. The brigantine Progress, wrecked at Palliser Bay, was insured by Owen and Company, of Auckland, owners, for £ISOO in the South British and £IOO in the Globe. Railway Employes’ Picnic. Tke railway employes’ annual excursion took place to-day at Hunua, Papakura. They went out in twenty-six carriages. A series of field sports were carried out, which passed off successfully. “H MS- Pinafore. Notice has been served, on behalf of Mr J. B. Williamson, on Mr Wade, the lessee of the Theatre Royal, prohibiting the performance of “Pinafore.” Mr Wade refuses to acknowledge the exclusive right of Mr Williamson, and determined to play it till some better authority is shown. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, William Biley and Robert Robertson were committed for trial on three charges of highway robbery, two being with violence. All the offences took place in Timaru. Both men are well known in Dunedin, and it is believed the police have made a very important capture. Robertson made a clean breast of the whole thing. Both men are aged about twenty-eight. DUNEDIN, January 24. The Wesleyan ConferenceAt the Wesleyan conference to-day, Mr A. O. Coughey was received as a probationer to be appointed to a circuit. Messrs J. S. Wills and F. J. Jones were received as candidates to be sent for training to Wesleyan College. D. J. Murray was similarly received for one year's training at the College, the year to be counted as the first of his probation. J. Dukes was unanimously received as a candidate to be appointed to a oircuit. The Rev. Armitage, convener of committee on ministerial applications, brought up the report of the committee, which stated that several ministers in England, Ireland, and Australia had applied for admission into the New Zealand Conference. Consideration of the report was deferred to a later stage of the conference, when it shall have been ascertained what places require additional ministers. FireA stable, the property of Q-eorge Worsdall, of North-East Valley, was burned yesterday. The loss is estimated at £3OO. It was insured in the New Zealand ofiice for £l5O. Colonel ScratchleyColonel Scratchley arrived by special train this morning. He afterwards went down the harbor in the steam launch to select a site for the batteries, and then wont to White Island in the Hinemoa.
