GREAT BRITAIN AND TONGA.
The text of a treaty cf friendship bet wean Great Britain and the King of Tonga is published in the " Gazette." It ia stipulated that "if any subject of her Britannic Majesty in Tonga is charged Hith a criminal offence cognisable by British, law, such charge may be tried by her Britannic Majesty's High Commissioner for the Western Pacific Islands, or other British officer duly authorised by her Britannic Majesty in that behalf. If any subject of her Britannic Majesty in Tonga is charged with an offence against the municipal law of Tonga, not cognisable a 3 such under British law, ho shall be amenable to the jurisdiction of the Tonga Courts, the proceedings of which shall bo conducted in public, and the records of which shall be public and accessible. If any subject of her Britannic Majesty in Tonga is charged with a criminal offence cognisable cs such both by British law and tho laws of Tonga, tho pirty charged may elect whether ho will be tried by a Tongan Court or by tho Court c£ her Britannic Majesty's High Commissioner." Great Britain agrees to surrender any subject of tho King of Tonga, found within her dominions, who may be accused or convicted of murder, or attempt to murder, embezzlement, or larceny, fraudulent bankruptcy, or forgery.
