[Via Auckland.] SYDNEY, January 14. The stamp duties were considered and carried. The tariff resolutions increased the duties on spirits, imported or distilled in the colony, sparkling and other imported wines. The most extensive bush fires ever experienced raged on the night of the 13th round Newcastle.
The projected Sydney Meat Preserving Co. failed to form, and it was decided to break Subscriptions for Irish relief are pouring in. The country towns are moving in the matter, and influential gentlemen are personally canvassing Sjdney. Eraser and Co.| have given £250, and promised a second sum of like amount if required. The Bank of New South Wales contributed £SOO. Prominent theatrical and musical artists subscribed handsomely, besides offering their services for an entertainment fund.
A practical discovery rendering Bank notes non-photographic has been made by a Sydney chemist. It is stated that the leading Banks are in treaty for the purchase of the patent. Numerous meetings of protectionists have been hald, to protest against the fiscal policy of the Government.

Several Primitive Mttho lists at Magenta Mines have seceded from that body and call themselves Independent Methodists. A dispute hss arisen between the two parties as to a division of church buildings. Captnin Pearce will proceed to Europe by the Kent to exhibit a panorama of Victoriawith descriptive lectures, with a view to encouraging emigration: ADELAIDE, January 14.
The Postmaster-General has received information that the steamer has arrived at Banjoewangie with [a section of the duplicate cable to be laid between that place and Port Darwin.
The Irish Belief committee have received £2103 additional subscriptions. £ISOO wasreceived from Archbishop Goold, including his own donation of £SOO. Several subscrip->-tions of one hundred guineas have been received, and the committee hope to remit £SOOO to the Lord Mayor of Dublin on Friday. Meetings in aid of the fund are being held all over the country and large sums collected.

Miss Potts, while bathing at Rockhampton, was carried out a long distance by a wave. Miss Hayß, who was with her, boldly swam out. and after great exertions rescued her insensible. Respiration was restored in half an hour.
HOBART TOWN, January 14, The Treasurer's Budget shows a deficiency for the last year of £135,000.
