LECTURE ON MUSIC.

The announcement that the Very Reverend Father O'Malley, 8.J., would deliver a lecture on this popular subject, attracted a large and appreciative audience to the Oddfellows'Hall last evening. The chair was taken at 8 o'clock by Mr R. J« Loughnan, who in a few appropriate words' introduced the lecturer to the audience. Father O'Malley divided his lecture into three parts; the first was devoted to soundi the second to the science of music, and the third to the rules of harmony. The two latter were illustrated by examples, vocal and instrumental. The wave theory, velocity of sound, pitch, number of vibrations, resonance, echo, difference between noise and music, the human ear and human voice were described, while sight singing, variation of accompaniment, modulation, enharmonic change, syncopation, tremolo, imitation, change from minor to major, counterpoint, canon, fugue, and harmonising were interpreted in a most effective style by some lady and gentlemen amateurs oonneoted with the Roman Catholio Church, Barbadoes street, tha organist of which presided at the pianoforte. At the conclusion, the Rev. lecturer resumed his seat amidst great applause, and a vote of thanks was proposed to him by Mr R. Loughnan, seconded by Mr Percival. The same compliment was also paid to the chairman, and the ladies and gentlemen who gave their services. Amongst the most successful pieces rendered were the "Kyrie" and "Gloria" Haydn No. 2, a canon by a Frenoh composer, and an arrangement by the lecturer of Moore's " Shamrock." The proceeds of the entertainment will be devoted to the funds of the convent.
