DUNEDIN, January 20. The first annual meeting of the United Fire Brigades' .Association was held in the library at the Dunedin Fire Brigade main station to-day. The following delegates were present: Christchurch, Superintendent Harris (President), firemen Marsh and Smith j Dunedin, Captain Murphy, Secretary Eobertson ; Wellington, Yolunr.eer Superintendent Whiteford, Captain Wilson ; Wanganui, Treasurer Jones ; Wellington, Central Captain Mosp, Secretary Austin, Treasurer Adams; Kaiapoi, Superintendent Smith; Timaru, Captain Mills ; Naseby, Fireman Hosie; Lyttelton, Fireman Scdcole ; Bangiora, Superintendent Gulliver; Napier, Sub. - Superintendent Spenco, Fireman Gilbert ; Port Chalmers, Captain Dale ; Waimate, Captain J. Sinclair, Fireman Hunter; Mornington, Captain Telford ; Caversham, Captain Blagdon. The following letter from Mr Stevens, M.B.H. for Christchurch, was read : I write to inform you that I have been unsuccessful in obtaining a capitation allowance for the United Fire Brigades that free passes will be given for members attending the demonstration. I may observe that I believe the Government to be favorable to giving aid, but for the present statu of the finances, and I would, there fore, BUggest that the subject should fcejpursued next session. In that case I shell be glad to farther the object in view to the best of my power. The draft of a Bill to bo introduced next session was read. It contains the following clause .—" It shall not bo lawful to use any building within the borough if more than two stories high as an hotel or public lodging house without providing on the outside of such building one or more iron ladders, so fixed from the top of such building in front of the window of each story to within ten feet of the ground aB to provide a means of escape therefrom. Every such ladder must be fixed and shall be constructed in such manner as shall be required by the surveyor or other officer appointed by the Counoil." Superintendent Harris, of Christchurch, was eleoted president, and Secretary Bebertson, jDuaedir, hen, secretary.
