SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Sydenham Borough Council held their usual fortnightly meeting list evening, his Worship the Mayor in the chair, and all Councillors p'eeent with the exception of Cre. Joyce and Langdown. The Mayor was authorised to sign all kerosene licenses. A letter was read from the RsjjistrarGeneral's cfficp, calling attention to the fact that in tho monthly report of vital statistics furnished to the Council all comparisons and proportions are based as in the month of March, 1878, now one year and ten months past. The importance of revising the tables was pointed out by ascertaining tho population of the borough on the Ist of January, 1880, and thu town clerk was requested to furnish the Registrar-General with the actual number of inhabited houses within the boundaries of the borough on that date, exclusive of stores or ui tenanted houses. The clerk was authorised to furnish tho necessary information. A letter was received from the General Crown Lands Oilice, stating that the Crown grant for the land set aside as an endowment for the borough of Sydenham, was ordered to be prepared on the 6t.li December, 1878, and that inquiries into the delay of its preparation would forthwith bo instituted. It was resolved that the loiter be received with thanks. A letter the Rakaia and Ashburton Forks Railway Company was read, offering compensation for the lai.da proposed to be
taken at the rate of £5 per acre, being the usual rate paid under such circumstances. It was resolved that the Commiesioner of Waste Lands, Mr MarshmaD, te requested in
preparing the Crown grant of the borough reserve at Cherteoy, to exempt therefrom 8 acres 1 rood 24 perches required by the Ashburton Forks Railway Company as shown in their form of application, unci that the said company shall pay the sum of £25 per acre as compensation for such land reserved before the authority is sens to Mr Marahtnan, and give an undertaking to fence it at the company's expense. A lette> was read from the Riccarton Eoad Board, acknowledging the receipt of Borough Council's account for half cost of maintenance of the Boundary rond for the six months ending September 30th, 1879, amounting to £304 6s Bd. The Road Board having been advised that it is not liable to pay the item for metal, viz., 990 at 105—£495, this amount was deducted, together with £l3 13s cost of spreading metal, and £6 13a 6.1 an error in the cost of drain pipes, leaving a balance of £SO Os 2d due the Borough Council, a cheque for the amount "being enclosed. The matter wa9 referred to the works committee with power to act. The works committee reported that notices had I een served on owners of property abutting on Fallsgrave and Stevens streets to form and metal them within one month ; also, in compliance with the wishes of p. deputation from the residents of Sandridge, the committee authorised the collection of the cost of forming the streets at once, and that notice be served upon the residents to shingle the same or the Council would do the work, as provided by the provisions of the M. C. Act. The committee further reoomme-d the formation and metalling of Reece's street, the ratepayers having paid in the estimated cost of constructing the same. The report was received and adopted. The finance committee reported the receipts and expenditure for the past fortnight, as follows :—Receipts—Bates, 1879, £205 17a Id; miscellaneous, including fines, dog fees, &c, £94 14a lid ; total, £3OO 12s. Accounts passed for payment, £229 6$ 6d. Cr. balance at Bank, £1374 2j 4d.
The report was received and adopted. The street naming committee reported that, as the work previously done did not appear to meet with the Council's approval, the committee decided to start afresh, and ignore all that had previously been done by the street naming committee. That in all cases where old rames have been iu use for years they shall be retained on the new map of the borough, with the exception of Gasworks road, Pound road, and streets named to correspond with figures. That approved names of modern authors be applied to streets, except in those streets named in Clause No. 2, and that they have selected the following .-—A list of names was appended to the report. The Council resolved, with certain exceptions, to affirm the principle of naming the streets in the borough after popular authors. The clerk to the Ashburton Borough Council wrote notifying their intention of holding the first meeting of the Municipal Association on Wednesday, 28th inst., in the City Council Chambers, at which delegates from the Sydenham Council were invited to be present. It was resolved on the rising of the Council to adjourn the meeting until next Friday evening, for the purpose of discussing the questions affecting the interests of the borough to be brought before the Conference. After some further busings of routine character, the Council adjourned.
