CRICKET.

ELEVEN V. FIFTEEN. This match was to have been played on New Year's Day and last Saturday, but owing to the rain the game was not commenced until Saturday last. The Eleven, playing two substitutes for E. Fowler and M. J. Godby, went first to the wickets, but with the exception of Hartland a very poor display of batting was shown. The wicket prepared was anything but good, which perhaps in a measure acoounts for the shortcomings of some of the batsmen. J. Fowler and Hartland first appeared, but the former, after playing rather uncertain at several balls from Beard, sent an easy chance to Stevens—one for 14. Aehby came, and played some bumpy ones from Beard before he was bowled by a long hop, which he tried to hit to leg—two for 24. Baker did not appreciate the wioket, and was bowled by a grand ball from Beard, the bails just being displaced. Turner received one ball, which he placed in the hands of third man —three and four for 32. Sheath allowed a simple one from Atack, who relieved Fairhurat, to pass, and Reeves failod to Btop a good one from the same bowler, the ball working well across the wicket, and just taking the leg bail—five and six for 36. C. Frith soon compiled his score of a dozen, including a good square leg hit for 5, when he placed tho ball in the hands of Milner at coverpoint. Fuller added a little life to the game, but in trying a sharp run for a cut, was well run out by Milner from coverpoint. Ross joined Hartland, and the game became very slow, both batsmen letting off numbers of opportunities for scoring. At Hartland was unfortunately bowled off his pads, after scoring 40. His dofence was good, but he did not bit so much as usual. A leg hit for 5 and five 3'a were his principal figures. Perceval came, but soon lost his partner, who was bowled by Wheatley. The total being only 97. Nearly an hour remained before stumps were drawn. Tho Fifteen commenced their innings with Watson and O'Callaghan to the bawling of Ashby and Frith. At 18 O'Callaghan was bowled by Athby for 7, and with the score at 31, Wheatley was bowled by Frith, Morice was easily caught by Turner at point, and failed to stop his first ball. 3 and 4 for 33. Milner, whose turn it was now to go in, for some unaccountable reason did not do so. Mac Donnell therefore followed, but Watson did not long Eurvive, being bowled by Fuller, who had relieved Ashby at the southern wicket. Time was now called, the score being 42 for fivo wickets. We have just seen a telegram from M. J. Godby to the effect that he cannot go to Dunedin to take part in the interprovincial match, commencing on Saturday next. The committee therefore have to select some player to take his place.
