Prince Bismarck, who could find no time during his three days’ stay at Vienna to return the visits of the representatives of several of the great powers, seems to have been able to fascinate some ladies with his conversational wit. The German journals are now giving currency to some of the bon mots with which he is reported to have strewn his remarks to one of his fair friends, and a Viennese correspondent of the “ Czar ” has reproduced some of them. The most interesting of his sallies alleged relates to the actual relations of Austria and Buesia. The Chancellor having asked the lady bow she was, she replied, “ Not too well, Piince ; yon cannot imagine how an inquisitive woman suffers when she has the honor of being in the society of Prince Bismarck without daring to enquire his real business at Vienna." “ Oh,” returned the Chancellor, laughing, “ I should be sorry to see you unhappy. I came to Vienna to seek, with my friend Andrassy, some magnetic ree:le strong enough to attract to itself all the pacific elements.” 11 Magnetic needles, however,” retorted the countess, “always look towards the north.” “Yes,” said the piince, “ therein lies the point of the story.” One of the ancient English nobility had these words inscribed over his castle gate. They are worth copying for our own use : “ They say. What do they say ? Let them say.” CHRISTCHURCH AND PAPANUI. NOTICE.
