HORORATA RACES. This annual meeting came off on January Ist, in the district Domain. The weather, though threatening in the morning, was exceedingly pleasant throughout the day, and the local attendance very large. The course, which has been well looked after at a good deal of expense, was in capital going order, and a now saddling paddock, built since last year, was a very noticeable improvement. The various officials were most assiduous in the discharge of their duties, working well together with very satisfactory results. A new stand had been erected by Mr Palmer, which was not so well patronised as it should have been, but in the luncheon room beneath, as well us in Mr MortU's booth by the course, the cate ers did good business. In the absence of the Hon. John Hall, Mr Gough acted as judge. Messrs Dpi on, Peacocke, and Cres»well gave every satisfaction as handioappers, as did Mr James Oordy as starter, and Mr Thorne as clerk of the scales. Eive saddled up for the Hororata Cup, for which Don Juan, the winner of last year, was the favorite. Wairiri made the running for the first mile or so, with Don Juan in close attendance, and Tawera nest. Three quarters of a mile from homo Wairiri’s bolt was shot, and Royal slightly improved his position, but it was evident that the issue was between the favorite aud Tawera. The latter, however, who was carrying 101 b. overweight, tired coming home, and Don Juan won by about a short length. The Trotting Race was a gift to Polly, against whom a protest was entered, but disallowed by the stewards. Three went to the post for the Open Handicap. Here old Shark went at once to the front and made play for nearly two miles, when he broke down, and Wairiri being by then quite out of tho hunt, Don Juan came on and won easily. In consequence of this mishap Shark was an absentee for the Hurdle Race, which follow ed. The event was thus reduced to a match between another Shark and Bessie. Both jumped well, but the horse had all the foot of his opponent, and won comfortably. After a capital Hack Hurdle Race, won by old Terror, a trio weighed out for the Ladies' Purse, the event of the meeting. The Don was quickest on his legs, and cut out tho work in front of Royal, Tawera lying back. They ran thus for a mile aud a-half, when Royal fell hack, beaten, and Sheonan, who had been riding with great patience, brought up Tawera, end getting on terms with Don Juan at the last turn, the two ran a clinking race home. Tawera, who was the fresher of the two, stayed the longest, and just secured a head verdict for bis owner, the energetic secretary of the club. The Consolation brought out a field of five, of whom tho Tout was tho most fancied, Tho winner, however, turned up in Defiance, who, uncommonly well ridden by T. Phillips, won by two lengths from Royal. This brought a very pleasant meeting to a conclusion. Results are appended : Hororata Cup (District) of 13 boys. lOst. One mile and a half. Mr A. The race was looked forward to with great expectation, but it proved a miserable farce. Batting—s to 4 on Lone Hand, 3 to 1 aget any other. Lone Hand led cff. Loch Lomond baulked at the double hurdle, but was subsequently persuaded over it. Lone Hand made an opening through the fence fronting tho water jump, making a way for the other to wade through it. At the top of the hill oil stuck at the fence. At lest Lone Hand cleared, and although from that to the finish bo baulked at every jump, and hud to be put to them a second time, ho won by barely a mile, Sportsman second. There was no other finisher. Stewards’ Handicap, of ICO sovs, with a sweepstakes of 3 sovs each for acceptors; amount accruing from sweepstake to goto second hone. Distance, ono mile and a distance. Belting—2 to 1 aget Hippo, 3 to 1 agst Sinking Fund, Maritana, and Lara, 5 to 1 agst Balmoral, 10 to I agst Malvern, 100 to 5 aget Gillie Callum and Xantippe. Tho race was a splendid ono between Hippo and Lara. The laltcr must have won, but at the distance pest her rider stupidly sat down on the horse, thinking he had passed the pest and won. When woke to the position he let the horse go, aud a grand raoo home was won by Hippo by a nose. Walters humorously says that another rider, Lara’s, lost a raoo for him in Christchurch through bad riding, and it was only right he should win for him this time through bad riding. Consolation Handicap. Laertes, Bst lOlbs 1 Rata, 7st 2 Malvern. 7st 121bs 3 Balmoral, Bst 121ba, and Yattapa, 7st 71bs, Also started; Sinking Fund, 9st, was scratched.
