SLAUGHTER HOUSE LICENSES.

The butchers of Chriitchuroh met on the 30th instant., when a large number of the trade were present. An animated discussion took place upon the object of the meeting, which was to consider the provisions of the Slaughterhouse Act. It was contended that these bore hardly upon the holders of licenses. Ultimately resolutions were agreed to, and a deputation appointed to lay them before the County Council at its next meeting. The substance of the resolutions were as follows :—l. “That the Council has imposed upon the holders of licenses what appears to them unreasonable demands in altering the construction of the floors of their slaughterhouses to a material which, from experience, they find will not answer.” 2. “ That the present method of collecting fees is vexatious, and that the Council bo requested to consider the propriety of levying a uniform rate on all retailers in the trade, a special rate to be levied in proportion to the amount of supervision required.” 3. “ That the practice of granting a license to a man rather than to the premises is objectionable, and that, so long as the premises are in a satisfactory state, that the character of the man should not be called in question.” 4. “ That the trade object to the Council compelling them to keep pigs 200 yards from their slaughterhouses j” 5. “That the trade consider that it is inconsistent to make them take out a new license during the year for which the first one was granted. If licensees are compelled to remove to fresh premises, the licenses should bo transferred.” 6. “ That the notice given to some of the trade to meet the requirements of the Council by building fresh premises is far too short.” 7. “ That the Council be strongly recommended to erect public abattoirs.” 8. “ That the punishment for breach of the law should be a money fine and not a cancellation of license.”
