In spite of the strong counter attractions there was a very fair attendance, upwards of a thousand spectators being present during the day, including many visitors from Christchurch. A fairly level course, three-quarters of a mile round, was marked off by a line of flags. The first event on the programme was — District Hurdle Race, 1J miles, over six flights of hurdles. First horse, £10; second horse to save bis stake. Post entry. Weight not leas than lOst. Entrance 16s. Mr O’Neill’s oh m Barmaid I Mr H. Piper’s hr m Venture 2 Mr D. McGuinness’s g h Forsaken 3 Mr John Kerr’s Punch .. ... ... ... 0 Barmaid made the running, closely pressed by Venture, but the latter refusing a hurdle left the race to Mr O’Neill’s mare, who won oiaily. District Handicap Trotting Race, 3 miles. First prize, £3 ; second horse, riding bridle given by W. White. Weight not less than lOst. Post entry. Entrance 10a. Mr Kirkwood’s Titokowaru, scratch ... 1 Messrs Batcher and Keith’s Cathleen, 260 yards ... ... 2 Mr John Kerr’s Punch, 130 yards 3 Nine started. Cathleen kept the lead for a long time, but Titokowaru came well up in rounding the third lap, and after a good race won by two lengths. Fifteen lengths between second and third. Piper’s Venture 1 Messrs Butcher and Keith’s Tongariro ... 2 Seven started. Venture took the lead, and kept it throughout, winning by two lengths. District Hack Race. First horse, £5. Post entry. Catch weights. Distance, three-quarters of a mile. Mr Piper’s Sit-me-down 1 Messrs Batcher and Keith’s Dick 2 Five started. Dick went off with the lead, which he maintained till close home, when he was passed by Sit-me-down, splendidly ridden by Watty, whose jockeyship excited much admiration. An exciting finish resulted in favor of Sit-me-down by one length. A Consolation Stakes, won by Mr Osborne’s Whalebone, concluded a very successful day’s sport.
