FiresA fire broke out at the house of Stephen Darley, Mount street, and was suppressed by the neighbors. Only a chi’d, three years old, was in the house at the time, and was asleep. At midnight, a fire broke out in the house of Theodore Brown, at Ponsonby, and the house was destroyed. It was insured in the Liverpool and London, the building for £120; the furniture in the Now Zealand for £l5O. The origin was the upsetting of a kerosene lamp. Grahame, Brown’s father-in-law, in jumping out of the back window fell, injuring bis spine. An Investigation. Inspector Thompson, A.C.. and Captain Brenton, Naval Training School, have been appointed to investigate the charge agair it Captain Lowrie, the Kaipara pilot. A LoaferA man name! Goldsmith, lately from Christchurch, was sentenced to-day to two months’ imprisonment for keeping a disorderly house. AUCKLAND, December 22. Fires. A fire broke out at noon in Harper's Buildings, Victoria Quadrant, on the roof. It is believed it was started by a spark from an adjoining chimney. The house was gutted, but the furniture was saved. Insurance— Norwich Union, £2OO. INVEEOAEGIL, December 22. The New Coal Mines. Twenty tons of coal from Preservation Inlent arrived on Saturday by the steamer luo. It looks very superior,, and is to be t -tted for gas and domestic purposes. SuicideA man named Charles G. Lynngdahl, a Swede, committed suicide early yesterday morning. He was found by a constable hanging by a rope from a pole used for a clothes line in a yard at the back of the Clarendon Hotel, where he he i been staying. The deceased was about fifty years of age, and arrived from Melbourne, where he was a clerk in Spence Bros.’s ostaolishment. About six weeks ago his wife went home from Melbourne, but the deceased was unable to go from want of funds, and came here to better his position. He had been in low spirits since his arrival, and, in a lettir addressed to a townsman here, he says his nervous system was ruined, and that suspense and disappointment had done for him. An inquest will be held.

The crew of two men, who owned the schooner, got on to the keel, from wh'ch they were taken, much exhausted, by the barque Lur’ine. The tug went out to try and get the schooner ashore, but there was a high sea on, and she could not attach a rope to the vessel, which is sti’l floating about the harbor, drilling to sea, the wind being off the land. Another attempt will be made to save the vessel when the wind lulls. Price v. RenataAll yesterday, to a late hour, the Supremo Court was occupied hearing the case Price y Renats, an action 1 1 recover compensation for alleged malicious prosecution. About six months ago Renata, a we' 1 , known chief, criminally prosecuted P.ice and Donnelly for conspiracy to defraud by bidding for several racehorses of Price’s which were offered by auction. The Grand Jury threw out the bill. This action was to recover damages. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for one shilling, end the Judge refused to certify for costa. Messrs Duller and Rees conducted Renata’s cr • e . WELLINGTON, December 20. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 22. Heavy FloodsMr T. King was elected without opposition for the vacant seat on the Harbor Board. There have been heavy floods in the district at Waiongana. A mass of large pines and other timber was carried away above Mr Brown’s saw mill. The flood carried away the embankment of a dam and a bridge. A heavy fresh came down last evening at ten o’clock, which caused the p.s. Hauraki to break away from her moorings. Fortunately her anchor got foul of the cable by which the p.s. Coomerang was moored, and also of a large snag which held her until she was secured. DUNEDIN, December 21. Otago Rifle AssociationThe Otago Rifle Association gathering finished yesterday. The Consolation match, ranges, 200, 400 and 500 yards, was won by Volunteer Oreagh, of the City Guards, with a score of 52. The Cadet match was won by the Dunedin Naval Brigade. The Long Distance match, any rifle, was postponed for a month. Stray Leaves CombinationThe Stray Leaves [Combination opened at the Queen’s last night to a good house. Sale of a HotelThe Douglas Hotel, Princes street, was sold by auction on Saturday for £5350 cash to Robert Wilson. The “Evening Tribune ” The goodwill, plant end book debts of the “ Evening Tribune ” newspaper were offered at auction on Saturday and passed in at the reserve of £SC J, the highest bid being £450. The Huon Belle. The ketch Huon Belle, as she lies stranded on Goat Island, was sold to Captain Sutherland for £6O.
