ENGLAND v. COLONIES. This match vras continued on Saturday last, England, who had lost eight wickets for 03 runs, resuming their innings. The last two wickets only added 1 to the total, which necessitated a follow on. In their second venture, England wsro much more successful, hut the fielding of the colonies was not by any means good, nevoral catches being missed. Ashby, Stevens, Captain Tomple, and Morice played well for their runs, but at the fall of the last wicket the total was only 150, leaving the Colonies 41. to pet to win, which was easily accomplished with tho loss of two wickets. The Christchurch club went firot to tho wickets, and put together 100 before tho last wicket fell. All contributed something, although Anson with 10, Washer with 16, and Marshall with a very useful J:29 not out, wore the only ones to got into double figures. Monck and Howarth opened the batting for Woolston, but tho latter, a rather dangerous batsman, was disposed of by a splendid one-banded catch by Wheatley at long leg before lie had time to score. Monck only made 10 when he was bowled by White, and hardly any of the others did anything. The fielding of the Christchurch Club was excellent, and Mayne’s bowling came oil very well. Ho got seven wickets for 13 runs. When tho innings closed there was still about an hour to time, but as several of the Woolston men had left the second innings had to be left for the second day. This turned out to hi simply an afternoon’s leather hunting for the Woolston men, who only disposed of their opponents by half-past five, and after they had made the fine score of 209. Washer played a very good innings for 53 with only one chance, and Wheatley showed something like his old form for 37. With 278 for the Woolston to get to win, and with half an hour to get it in, the match of course ended technically in a draw, but there can be no possible doubt as to how it would have ended if played out.
