Oeess association.] AUCKLAND, December 18. The Water S apply. Mr Errington, water-works engineer, has made an offer to the City Council to work the water supply, after saving 20 per cent. Harbour Dredging. The Harbour Board has suspended dredging operations in the harbour, the silt from Dempsey’s railway reclamation rendering the labour useless. The Contractor and his Men. At the 8.. M. Court over fifty summonses were gone into against Dempsey, by his men, fir wages. Judgment was given for the plaintiffs. WELLINGTON, December 18. Voting Twice. William Hales was this morning charged with voting twice at the recent election for the House. The evidence was taken, and the accused remanded to allow the voting papers to be produced. Testimonials. The reporters of the press gallery yesterday afternoon presented Mr E. J. Gillon with a
handsome walnut stationery cabinet in acknowledgment of his services during the present session. The cabinet was accompanied with a testimonial. Parliamentary. The House met at 11 o’clock this morning. The Appropriation Bill and Immigration and Public Works Appropriation Bills were introduced. In committee these Bills were passed. Clause 30 of the Public Works Bi'l was then taken up, Mr Outer proposed to add the following in lieu of clause 30 —" It shall be lawful for the Governor in Council from time to time, on being satisfied that the expenditure on any of the district railways, specified in the schedule hereto, by the company ■ constituted for the purpose of constructing the same, has been economically expended, to guarantee upon such terms and conditions, and subject to receiving such security as the .Governor in Council may approve, the" debentures or mortgages to be given by any such company for a sum in the aggregate not exceeding £60,000 of the expenditure of the company upon the construction and laying of any railway line constructed by them, and the erecting and building of any buildings and erections and the purchase of rolling stock in connection he-ewith being the property of the comps ny.” Sir G. Obey moved that £30,000 be substituted for £60,000. In reply to Mr Barron, Sir G. Geey said that if his amendment were accepted he would not insist upon specific sums being allocated to particular companies. The question that £30,000 be substituted for £60,000 was put and carried on the voices. Sir G. Grey then moved, as a further amendment, that no amount be granted to any eno company in excess of the sum of £15,000. Mr Montgomery suggested that the amount should not bo insisted upon, as the Government would be responsible for what they did. Later. The House continued, and the Bill was reported with amendments. WELLINGTON, December 17. At the Magistrate’s Court a Native lad, named Toko Mace, was committed for trial on two charges of horse stealing. A third charge of larceny as a bailee was withdrawn. The installation of Mayor was postponed, owing to the non-attendance of Councillors, DUNEDIN, December 17. Lucky Creditors! Something new in connection with insolvency matters has just come to light in the estate of one James Black, a verdict, obtained by the trustees against the sheriff and others, having been reversed on technical grounds. The costs of both plaintiff and defendant have to be paid out of the estate. After paying preferential claims and a dividend of ten shillings in the pound, there remains in hand £528 4s lOd. The_ law expenses amount to £717 10a lid, leaving a deficiency of £lB9 6a Id, to meet which a call of haif-a-crown has been made upon the solvent creditors, whose claims amount to £1535 5a 83. Mayoral. The annual meeting for the installation of Mayor was adjourned for a week, as the petition against Mr Eish’s return is not yet decided. Scholas'ic. The distribution of prizes at the Boys’ High School took place to-day, Judge Williams presided. The gold medal for dux of the upper school fell to Peter A. Lindsay, and the silver medal for dux of lower school to Herbert P. Labatt. CricketThe cricket match, Dunedin Club v Christchurch Collegians, was won by the latter after a good game. In the first innings Dunedin scored 90 and the Collegians 103, Harman making 39, not out. In their second innings the Collegians lost seven wickets for forty runs when time was called. Otago Eifle AssociationThe annual prize firing meeting of the Otago Eifle Assoc ation commenced to-day. In the first match, ranges 400 and 600 yards, the first prize fell to Yol. A. Anderson, of Olutha, with the average score of 67 points. The range prizes of £lO each being carried off at 410 yards by Vol McSwan with the excellent score of 39, at 509 yards by Yol. A. Anderson with 42.
