Floods at Hungary still continue. Several villages have been destroyed, and ten thousand persons rendered homeless. One hundred are missing. Troops are assisting. The Melbourne Exhibition. Russian Affairs. Arrests continue to be made in Russia in connection with the late attempt on the
life of the Emperor, including that of one person who had in his possession a plan to enter the Palace.
CALCUTTA, December 12. The Viceroy. The "Viceroy, on his arrival to-day, was twice fired at, but escaped unhurt. The would-be assassin was arrested. He was a drunken Native. The matter has no political significance. Afghan Affairs. General Macpherson attacked and dispersed the force of the enemy who captured the supplies. Latest news from Cabul states that the British troops were attacked by the Afghans south of Balahissa. The enemy were repulsed. General Roberts reports a coalition among the tribes to a great extent. The British loss in the late engagement was forty-three killed and wounded. December 14. After the engagement the Kohistanis retired to the heights. Macpherson renewed the attack unsuccessfully on the 12th. Baker subsequently joined him, and their united attack was completely successful in dislodging the enemy.
