LYTTELTON BOROUGH SCHOOL.
Tha distribution of prizes took place last night at tho above school. Tha assembly hall of tha school was crowded, Mr H. B. Webb, chairman of the school committee, said he was pleased to see from tho report that the children had employed the past year very profitably. Ho referred regretfully to the absence of the Mayor and Dr. Donald. He had much pleasure in congratulating them ou tho efficiency of_ the school. Mr Bestell, tho inspector, had kindly f;iven him a preliminary report, which he ound was a very favorable one, and the result of his last inspection. Tho order, neatness, and sanitary arrangements wore exemplary. Tho school rooms, ho thought, were the best ventilated in Canterbury. _ The examination of the scholars had been highly satisfactory. In respect to tho inetmetionin vocal music under Mr Suckling, ho, tlm inspector, had known far higher pretensions made with very much inferior results. As chairman of tho committee, ho stated they had done their best to get an efficient mistress for the infant school, but had not yet mot with one. Yesterday ho had heard of one well up in the kindergarten system, and he hoped to conclude with her. Mr Wobb then spoke of the advantages of the kindergarten system. The prizes, he regretted, were not so numerous ns Inst year, owing to the Borough Council having decided this year that tbey had no power to donate their usual subscription. He recommended an endowment for tho purchase of prizes ; £IOO or £l5O would at interest yield sufficient in a year or two to produce a nice income us a prize fund, Tho parents should think of the suggestion, Tho average attendance during the past year had exceeded that of any previous one. The attendance was in March quarter, 456; June quarter, 453 459 ; and December, 535. Mr Webb then gave cut the prizss, the calling out of each of the sucoesetul scholars being the signal for applause. Tho following is a Let of the prize takers : upper SCHOOL. First Class.
