ANNIVERSARY SPORTS.
A meeting of the coir mittco of the anniversary aporta was held yesterday at 4 p.m. Present—His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Messrs Hobday, Pavitt, Pratt, Walkden, Crooks, Haskins (hon. sec.), Ollivier, Mitchell, Briggs, Hulbert, Wachsmann, Hebden, 1. Hobbs, M. Lowin, and R. C. Bishop. The Secretary stated that Mr Alport was absent unavoidably, but had sent in a memorandum of the amount realised at the sale of booths, viz , £166. The Mayor said that this was very satisfactory indeed. Tho total amount was double I-’--* had been received last year 1 , £ind some Privileges yet remained to . P A letter was read from Mr Alport, bringing certain matters before the committee which required attention. , Mr Pratt reported that certain rules had been incorporated in the programme by the programme committee. He would road the rules which bad been adopted. (Head.] It was proposed to incorporate these in the programme,]einiilar to thoee ontho programme of the Wellington Caledonian Society. Mr Ollivier moved —“ That the report of the programme committee ho adopted.” Mr Pavitt seconded the motion, which was carried. . . On the motion of Mr Ollivier, the programme committee was empowered to call for tenders for printing programmes, and except tho one they considered best, Mr Charrill asked permission of the committee to erect posts, &a., for the lotting off of tho fireworks on Anniversary night. The posts required to bo erected would bo about the size of clothes posts. Mr Ollivier thought that tho lessee of tho ground was the proper person to apply to for permission, and if this were granted then tho ■ committee could bo asked whether they had any objection, which ho thought they could not have. So long na tho posts were not in any way interfering with tho sports the committee had no power. Mr Briggs thought that tho application should be made to the Domain Board. Mr Walkden said that the committee had obtained the use of the ground for the sports of the day, and no took it that the fireworks formed psrt of the sports of the day, so that no further application need be made to the Mr Mitchell took it that the application meant that the gentlemen who intended to let off the fireworks wished to know whether the posts they intended to erect would bo in the way of the sports. He felt sure that if the fireworks were erected they would have boys lotting them off. Mr Hebden said he would move—“ That the matter bo referred to the ground committee, with a view to a conference between them and tho fire brigade committee, and to assist them so far as is possible.” Mr Ollivier seconded tho motion, which was agreed' to. Mr Mitchell suggested that as the funds of the committee were larger than last year, they should have two bands, one to play on tho terrace and one on the flat. Three tenders wore opened for band for the day,- as • follows : —Mr Button's band, sixteen performers, £l2 ; Railway Band, from twelve to sixteen performers, £1 per man ; Third Battalion-Band, sixteen performers, £l2. lit was resolved that the tenders of Mr Button and the 3rd Battalion Band be accepted. Mr Hebden moved—“ That Messrs Pratt and Briggs bo appointed a committee to make np a' list of gentlemen willing to act as money-takers, and to apportion their places «nd hours of duty. To report on Friday next.” Mr Hulbert seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Messrs Pratt and Briggs were appointed joint treasurers. It was resolved that Messrs Haskins and Alport be empowered to engage money-takers for the grand stand. Mr Ollivier moved—That the customary mild refreshments supplied for tho use of the committee be procured as usual.” Tho motion on being seconded was agreed to. Mr Alport brought under the notice of tho committee tho wish of Mr Collier, the purchaser of the two sites for publicans’ booths, to erect only one. Mr Ollivier moved—“ That the committee are of opinion that the object in leasing two sites for publicans’ booths was to provide for the increased accommodation required by the public attending the sports, and they expect the contractor to comply with the conditions of sale.” The motion, on being seconded, was agreed to. Mr Hebden brought up a draft form of notice, to be posted on the course, as follows : —“•Notice —The committee request that the public will not trespass on the course. If this request is -disregarded the sports will bo stopped.” The draft form was adopted. The meeting then adjourned until Friday, at 4 p.m.
