FIRE BRIGADE DEMONSTRATION.

Unusual eclat will this year be given to the close of tho anniversary sports by the substitution of a grand pyrotechnic display in Hagley Park, instead of the torchlight procession through the streets of the city. The display will be on a very large scale, the Brigade having specially imported a choice and varied assortment of devices and material from England. The management has been placed in the hands of Messrs Hobbs and Hillicr, and they will have the valuable assistance of Councillor Cherrill, who hus had a great deal of experience in pyrotochny, having for somo years paßt had a Bmnll display of his own. Having obtained the permission of the sports committee to uee the grand stand, the Brigade will tell off a strong detachment of the members to see to the seoting of ticket holders and tho prevention of any other persons taking possession of seats and overcrowding tho stand. The arrangements for letting off the fireworks are as follows : The principal devices and large rocket stacda aro arranged in the form of a crescent, the face being devoted to the smaller rockets, roman candles, vortical wheels, cascades, bouquets, triangles and horizontal wheels. Tho principal emblematic device, " Success to the Volunteer Eire Brigade," occupies a central position in the centre, and at the buck of the semi circle. The stands will bo erected in the centre of the running course, from esst to west, and about thirty yarda from the grand stand, from which a splendid view will bo obtained. Tho brigade will commcuco their operation at the termination of the sports. Tho Railway Band will play between tho hours of eight and ten, which will add to the general exhilaration, the display of fire. Yorks commencing !at 9 o'clock. In addition to the Christchurch Brigade, thoso from Lyttelton, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, and Railway Brigades will swell the procession, assembling at the Lichfield Station at 8 p.m.
