A little girl belonging to the Industrial School was carried into deep water while bathing at Motuihi. She was gallantly rescued by a lad named Michael Bren. GISBORNE, December 8. Action for Libel. Mr Webb, late of the " Standard," has commenced an action in the Supreme Court, Auckland, against Mr Edgcombe, late of Tauranga, claiming £IOOO damages for libel and slander. WANGANUI, December 8. A Wild Italian. The Italian who assaulted Dr. Earle on Saturday, proceeded to tho racecourse and burned down the fences by setting fire to them in twenty places. He threatened the custodian with a knife. The police went after him, and found him near the Heads. Stabbing CaseOn Saturday a shoemaker named Henderson, from the West Coast, stabbed Mr Pole, landlord of the Maxwell Town Hotel. The wound was not very serious. Accident. On Saturday a man named John Deverill was drowued in the Wanganui river. He took a horse into the river, and fell over a bank into deep water. WELLINGTON, December 8. A boy named Hockley had a narrow escape of being shot at Kaiwarra rifle range on Saturday. He crossed the range just as a man fired. The bullet, which passed through his clothes, curiously enough, made a centre. At the Magistrate's Court, Dennis McOormick, for stabbing Mr and Mrs Flannigan, was remanded for a week, owing to the latter being unable to attend. The young man Riot, for issuing valueless cheques, was also remanded. If is believed that fifteen other charges will be preferred against him. The Governor. It is believed his Excellency has abandoned the idea of going to Sydney for the present. Gleich's Creditors. At the Supreme Court, in Chambers, this afternoon, the Chief Justice made an order compelling the Insprctor of Police to hand over to the New Zealand creditors the property taken from one Gleich at the time of his arrest for fraudulent bankruptcy at Adelaide. The order was made in consequence of the Appeal Court having decided that New Zealand creditors had preference over the Adelaide creditors by Gleich having changed his domicile by visiting England. HOKITIKA, December 8. County Council Chairman. The County Council met to-day. The meeting was specially to determine what action should bo taken respecting the election of chairman, the annual meeting having lapsed. Finally it was resolved to request tho Governor to appoint another day to elect the chairman, in accordance with the opinion of Mr Purkiss, County solicitor, under the 211th clause of the Counties Act. The Gold Yield. The Bank of New Zealand shipped 8595 ounces gold per Olaud Hamilton for Melbourne to-day. About the same quantity is in tho hands of the Union Bank, ready to ah p. The gold yield is steadily increasing. TIMABU, Deoember 8. The Weather. The weather during the last forty-eight hours has been rery boisterous. Heavy rain has fallen, damaging the crops, flooding the rivers, and washing away a portion of the railway line at Otaio. DUNEDIN, December 8. Frank Wolf a, an apprentice, and William Fellon, a seaman of the ship Hermione, charged with embezzling cargo and carrying a naked light in the hold during the voyage from London, were tried before the Court today. Wolfe was sentenced to eight weeks' imprisonment, and Eelton to sixteen weeks with hard labor. Sporting. The Dunedin Jockey Club to-day received a letter from Mr H. P. At the District Court today, John Wilhofft for larceny was sentenced to twelve months. In bankruptcy the certificate of J. T.
