MAMMOTH MINSTRELS.
To quote the language of the poster, the “onward march” of the Mammoths through New Zealand came to a temporary halt on Saturday night, when they re-opened at the Theatre Royal. The excellent name left behind them on their former visit was sufficient to crowd the theatre on Saturday, and a capital programme was provided, which embraced specialities by all the leading members of the company. On the rise of the curtain the troupe, sixteen in number, was discovered in the orthodox semicircle, and the performance commenced with an orchestral arrangement of airs from “La Pille de Madame Angot,” excellently played, a vocal accompaniment being introduced. This was followed by songs from Messrs Newland, Amery, Ohoevers, Fredericks, Brown, Campbell, Bent, and Beaumont Read. It would be almost inviduous to specialise when all were so excellent, but Mr T. Campbell was exceptionally good in “ When the moon with glory brightens,” Mr Fredericks in “ Under the Snow,” and Mr Read in “Dorkin’s Night,” a pathetic story of an actor and his dying child. The finale, “ The Melbourne Cup Day,” was full of fun, and was received with shouts of laughter. Messrs Cheevers and Kennedy came next with their protean changes, introducing “ The Old Irish Gentlemen,” the “Rival Lovers,” ar.d the “ Happy Young Colored Folks.” MrW. H. Bent’s skit on “ You don’t say so ?” was provocative of uproarious laughter, Mr Bent revelling in the fun ho and Mr created. Mr Beaumont Read sang in his best Style the old favorite “ Maid of Athens,” and was enthusiastically applauded. Messrs Brown and Newland kept up the spirit in “ The Dancing Master,’’ and a capital programme was brought to a close with Mr Bent’s burlesque Indian drama “ Yellow Novel Heroes, or Life on the Plains,” in which all the principal members of the company appeared. The same programme will be repeated this evening.
