ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS.

A meeting of the firing committee' of the E. Battery, New Zealand Artil lory, took place a day or two ago at the British Hotel. Present—Lieut Strange (in the chair), Sergeant Duncan,. Corporals Farrell, Mills, and Sinclair, Gunners Jackson and Leahy. The chairman stated that the minute and letter hooka, and all other papers relating to the proceedings of the former committee, together with scoring cards and other records of matches fired by the battery were destroyed by the fire at the orderly room in March, 1879. Amongst other prizes competed for last season was a MartiniHenri rifle given by Captain Craig, and not finally won. Quarter-master sergeant Fox won it twicp, Jand Sergeant Hill once, but it has to be won three times by same competitor before it became his property. On the motion of Gunner Jackson, seconded by Corporal Mills, Corporal Farrell was elected hon. secretary to the committee. Amongst other matters discussed was a challenge from the captain of the B battery (Duredin) to fire a cirbino match between the 13th and 20th instant. Ou the motion of Corporal Farrell it was resolved— " That the challenge as received from the Dunedin B Battery be accepted." It was proposed by Captain Mills, seconded by Gunner Jackson, and carried—" That the next competition for Captain Craig's rifle take place on Wednesday, 10th inet, firing to commence at 2 p.m." It was resolved—" That all members,coropeting for prizes of any value whatever must first pay their subscriptions due to the battery, or any competitor whose subscriptions arc paid may enter a protest to the officer in charge of the firing party, at the finish of any match against those who may be entitled to take prizes by making the moßt number of points, and whose subscriptions are in arrears, such protest to be considered and decided by this committee." The meiling then adjourned till next Tuesday.
