GAIETY THEATRE.
Mies Beatrice's benefit last night attracted a large audience, all parts of the house being full. The piece was " H.il.S. Pinafore," and, considering the disadvantages of a small stage, it was well put on. Miss Jenny Thome played Josephine very well, singing her music with care and success. Miss Beatrice made a charming Buttercup, and both acted and sang with much vivacity. Mis* Williams made a very good Hebo, and Mr Fisher's Deadeye, as indeed have been all his performances, was vi-ry careful and artistic. His hornpipe was deservedly encored. Mr Alexander was good as the Admiral, and sang his songs with effect. Mrs Florence, though somewhat nervous in the part, mado a good captain, and Mr Florence was successful as Ralph. Between the first ap-J second acts, His Worship the Mayor came forward and B*id :—Miss Beatrice, —I have been requested by a few ladies and gentlemen to present you with this diamond ring, as a token of their personal esteem for you as a lady, and in appreciation of your distinguished abilities as an accomplished artist; whether it be in the legitimate drama, burlesque, or opera your varied talents find fitting scope. I will only add that it is their and my wish that you will live many many years to wear this gem, and continue as now to adorn (he profession which you have embraced. Miss Beatn'ea, in reply, thanked his Worship for his kindncjs in making the presentation, and desired also to thank the people of Christchurch far tho kindness they had always shown her since her arrival in Christchurch. She had never before received a presentation, and she could assure her hearers that this was the happiest moment of her life. Mr Ogden also spoke, thanking tho Mayor and those present, and asking them to have patience for a fortnight, when he would have the pleasuro of welcoming thorn in a new theatre.
