SPORTS COMMITTEE.
The Popular Sports Committee met yesterday afternoon, in the City Council Chamber, at the usual hour. Mr Ollivier moved—“ That the programme committee adopt from a copy of the Wellington Caledonian Society’s regulations, such portions as they consider adapted to the Anniversary sports, and that they add to the rules they adopt the following one, * Unless strict obedience shall be paid to the rules of the committee for preserving order and clearing the course for the fulfilment of the various items in the programme, the sports will immediately put an end to.’ ” This was agreed to. In reply to a letter from Mr George Gould re publicans’ booths and games of chance, it was resolved that the secretary should write to Mr Gould to the effect that no evil had ever resulted from the existence of booths upon the ground, and if it was found that evil consequences should arise therefrom the committee will be prepared to dispense with them, though they are a source of considerable revenue to the committee. Games of chance had never been allowed on the ground, and the committee would not sanction anything of the sort. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Pavitt, seconded by Mr Alport—“ That the attention of the Commissioner of Police be drawn to the objectionable practice of letting off Chinese crackers in the day time, with a view to its prevention.” It was resolved to call for tenders for printing the programmes. It was resolved that Mr Alport be authorised to advertise the sale of privileges on the ground. Messrs Mitchell, Hulbert, and Hebden were appointed a committee to purchase toys and lollies for the children. This terminated the business, and the committee adjourned.
