[Peb Fbess Agency. 1 Passing Valueless Cheques. WELLINGTON, December 3. P. J. Thomson, a respectable looking young man, was charged this morning on three separate charges of passing valueless cheques. He was committed for trial. NEW PLYMOUTH, December 3. The Titanic Steel Company. A public meeting was held last night at the Institute, the Mayor in the chair. It was unanimously resolved, “ That the meeting desires to urge on the Government and the Assembly the duty of ascertaining whether the essential provisions of the Taranaki Iron Smelling Act, 1874, have been honestly complied with, before deciding to hand over to the Titanic Steel Company 5000 acres of the public estate: that it wishes especially to draw attention to the question as to whether the company has at any period paid the actual capital required by section 6, really available for the purposes to promote which the grant was promised,” The County and Borough Councils have passed similar resolutions. A strong feeling exists here against the grant. Fatal Accident. AUCKLAND, December 3. A man, named Doyle, working at the Dempsey reclamation railway station, was killed instantaneously by a fall of earth from above the place where the men were engaged obtaining material for reclamation purposer. SportingAcceptances for the steeplechase and handicap at Auckland Autumn Race Meeting close to .morrow. WELLINGTON, December 2. The Tui Inquiry. An official inquiry into the accident to the Tui was held to day. According to the evidence several of the crew were under the influence of liquor. The captain took the wheel while the men were setting the fore* sail, which they seemed to have great difficulty in doing. The captain left the wheel and went to the standard compass for a few seconds. The Court were unanimously of opinion that the vessel grounded through proper judgment not having been exercised by the master, particularly through his having left his post on the bridge at a time when ho could not see the light, merely to set the foresail, which was no earthly use under the circumstances. The captain’s certificate was ordered to be suspended for throe months, and he was adjudged to pay costs. A Short Cable. Dr. Lemon shipped in the Sarah Pile today a piece of telegraph cable to stretch across Kaipara, from Northern to Southern Wairoa. Accident. An accident happened to-night by which a young child will probably lose its life. While an express man was unhitching his horse and putting the express away, the animal got startled and ran away, knocking down two children, and fracturing the skull of one and inflicting a gash on the other’s face. HOKITIKA, December 2. Police News. Two boys, Frith and McLean, for breaking into the State school and stealing, were each sentenced to twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, the younger (Frith) to receive five strokes with a birch, and bo sent to Oaversham Reformatory for six years; the elder to have nine strokes and five years in the same reformatory. At the District Court yesterday Manus McFadden for stealing mining tools pleaded “ Not guilty.” The jury were locked up for twelve hours, and could not agree. They were discharged, and a fresh jury enrolled today. After brief consultation they returned a verdict of “Guilty.” Sentenced to six months. DUNEDIN, December 2. The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Court was held to-day. A large number of transfers were allowed, and one publican’s license was granted. The Election of MayorsAt the meeting of the City Council to-day Mr Fish’s motion, suggesting that steps should be taken to place the election of Mayor in the hands of the Council, was discussed and adopted. A Roman Catholic Bazaar. The Dominican Convent bazaar was opened in the Garrison Hall to-day by Bishop Moran. BALOLUTHA, December 2. The Olutha Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Show to-day was very successful. The weather was fine, and there was a very large attendance. The Licensing BenchThe Licensing Bench to-day refused theapplications for licenses,'three in number. The Longwood B-eefs. Mr Prints, proprietor of a claim at Longwood, is in town to-night, and brought up with him the gold taken out of the rich shot recently struck. It is a capital sample of rough and pure gold, containing a number of small specimens, some of them being all gold, and including a large proportion of fine gold that apparently lies pure in the lode. The gold was contained in four pomade bottles,, which were weighed, and nearly turned the scale at 2slb, avoirdupois. There was a good deal of sand weighed with the gold, but at a moderate estimate there must have been 19oz. of clear metal.
