DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING. DUNEDIN, December 1. The stewards would appear to have made no mistake in postponing the Dunedin Jockey Club Spring Races from Saturday till today, tho weather being very fine this morning. Notwithstanding the heavy rainfall of last week the ground was not excessively heavy, the strong wind blowing yesterday and today having a very beneficial effect on it. The first race on the card was tho Free Handicap, for which only five out of the eight acceptors came to the post, Chancellor, Camballo, and Titania being scratched. This and tho other events will bo found in detail below. Fbee Handicap of 40 sova ; one mile. Mr P. Butler's b g Numa, aged, 6st 121 b (carried 7si 31b) ... ... (Endings) 1 Mr A. J. Gat 101 b ... (W. J. Taggart) 0 Betting—s to 4 on Soukar, 2 to 1 agst Numa, 3 to 1 agst Unknown and Oberon, 5 to 1 agst Grace Darling. After two breaks away all wore sent off together, but rounding the first turn Oberon took a lead of a length of Numa, next to whom came Soukar and Unknown a clear length ahead of Grace Darling. At a quarter of a mile tho latter was tailing off, but the rest closed up together, Oboron’s colors however being still in the van. At the back of tho course Soukar passed Numa, and a few hundred yards further on had Obercn in difficulties. Just before turning the straight Rudings brought Numa up with a rush, and passing Oberon he shortly collared Numa, and after a brief struggle wrested the load from him. Thence it was all over, for although Soukar and Oberon came gamely under punishment, the issue was never in doubt, Numa winning rather easily by a length from the favorite, with Oberon third three lengths off. Unknown was fourth, Grace Darling last. Time, Imin 53Jseo. Ladies’ Purse of 30 sova ; H miles; Welter weight for age ; gentlemen riders. Mr H. Betting—3 to 2 on Titania, 2 to 1 agst York ana Lara, 3to 1 agst Atlantic. After a lot of unnecessary fiddling at the post, the quartette wore despatched on oven terms. Atlantic cut out tho running afser the first few strides, and kept tho load, notwithstanding that in rounding tho turn he went right over to the outside of tho course. Lara hold second place for half a mile, but then Titania displaced him, and he and York run side by side a length behind her. Passing the stand tho four horses were in a string, with a length between each, but in going round the far side Titania began to creep up to Atlantic, and when exactly opposi e tho stand they were neck and neck. Here unfortunately a contretemps occurred, Hastie being seen to lose his seat. Ho clung to the horse’s neck for several strides, but then fell to the ground, and appeared to be struck by some of the horses, as he did not move for some time. This left Titania with a lead of four lengths of York and Lara, but at a mile and three-quarters they began to close on her simultaneously, but with York half a length ahead of Lara. Turning into the straight all were together, and a good race was anticipated, but Lara was soon in trouble, and though York got up to the favorite for a moment he could not retain the position, Titania shaking him off in the lest few strides and winning cleverly by a length. Lara was third, two lengths behind. Time, 3min. 58joo. When Atlantic came in, the boy, who was not hurt, stated that he fell off in consequence of the saddle slipping, this being occasioned by tho difficulty he had in keeping the horse straight.
