CO-OPERATIVE LAND, LABOR, AND STORE COMPANY.
At a meeting held at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Montreal street, last night, the room was crowded. Mr Peris was moved into the chair. He stated that this meeting had been culled to enable working men to discuss a plan for founding a settlement wherein the labor of all the shareholders (residence being compelled) should go into the land until it was paid for, and that the improved land should then bo bullotted in equal blocks among all the shareholders. Mr Treadwell would now explain the rules. Mr Treadwell then explained how he thought it would be possible for workiug mon, getting a grant of say fifty acrce to each working settler, and getting public works carried on in their midst, to detail a specified number to cultivate the land, fence it, build upon it, put cattle and sheep on it, and lay oil a township, and by making a savings bank and a co-operative wholesale and retail store, pub all profits in theirown pockets. This would only work if they could get at least 1000 shareholders, who wore all of good useful callings, and whose whole capital and labor wore thrown into the company, also if they need full power to forfeit and expel disorderly members. To this end there should bo no other drink than the bottle license of the company. The rules make full provision for sickness, accident, and death, so that no wrong or loss should be suffered through bereavement. Many questions were put to Mr Treadwell, which were allanswered. Ninety persons put down their names as shareholders, a provisional committee was elected out of sixteen proposed. Mr Perks was chosen chairman, Mr Petersen treasurer, and Mr Treadwell accepted the office of hon. mo. to assist in floating the company.
